India's batting strategy

In order to win the WC, a team needs to identify and cultivate a USP and execute consistently. So, what the f%ck am I talking about. India has an outrageous batting line-up. That is our USP. But, by definition only 2 or perhaps 3 bats are going to have a great day in any one game. All seven bats are not going to be able to contribute, as we saw with Pathan and Kohli yesterday. 3 from 7 are odds that at least 4 other teams can manage for three games on the bounce and that's all that is required to win the WC. So what exactly is our USP? Our USP has to be an ability to constantly elevate our total innings target if wickets are preserved. 200 for the loss of 1 or 2 wickets at the 30 over mark must be converted to 400 at T20 pace. India need to view the 50 over format as potentially two lots of T20 innings. There can be no middle overs for India. Run-a-ball 50s and 100s will not cut it for India and certainly doesn't justify Tendulkar's talent. Dhoni says if he can't defend 340 then India should go home. I disagree. If India are going to win the cup, they must win it their own way, like Sri Lanka once did by rewriting what counted as a good 1st 15 over total. Let the world ridicule our fielding and bowling. As long as we're left holding the cup at the end. Unless India adopt the above, we shall either lose, or win the cup unconvincingly.

338 total was a disgrace with the kind of platform we had, India is banking on its strength which is batting and playing extra batsmen at expense of weakening already weakened bowling line up. So Dhoni's tuk tuk in batting powerplay along with Yuvraj finding his form will not work. They have account for bad bowling and fielding while setting up totals which is unfortunate but it is reality.

For that we will probably need 15-16 wkts :P There is nothing wrong w/ Ind's batting strategy. 320 should be a good total more often than not. You go at 7-7.5 in the 20 power play overs and at 5.5-6 in regular 30 overs, which should give you approx. 320. Our top 4, along with Dhoni, one of Yuvi/Raina/Pathan and tail, is good enough to get us there. We need is to make sure that the good work by the batsmen doesn't go to drain. One way of trying to do that is may be go in with 5 bowlers. That should get the balance b/w delivering battting and failing bowling somewhat right :winky:

Dhoni should be very disappointed with 338 given the foundation India had. The old adage of targeting twice your 30 over score as long as you have 8 wickets in hand still applies. With India's talent they need to be 200/2 after 30 overs as a minimum. Also, if the powerplay is such a curse then why not take it in overs 15-20 thus creating 20 overs of uninterrupted fielding restrictions?

you can't double 200 LOL. we have to improve our fielding just little bit. We gave away 30 odd runs. we need to give away 20 only LOL so there 10 plus runs right there

Realistically, if you are 200/2 at 30, you can hope to reach 350-360 at the end of 30 overs. That old adage was of an era where you would look to be 150 runs at 30 overs mark. The batting powerplay can go either way where you could get say 50 runs or lose a few wkts so it's difficult to double the score to 200 in the last 20 overs. Even in T20, it's difficult to get 200 in 20 overs despite 10 wkts in hand and shorter boundaries :winky: Ind is almost playing at its best as far as batting is convcerned. If we try to put even more pressure on it, then it could have the opposite effect and crumble

Scoring 400 in majority games  Not gonna happen mate. What's the guarantee that any total can then be defended, Lanka came darn close a couple of yrs back chasing 414. In 1996, Lanka had the spinners to choke the middle overs up and an accurate Vaas with the new ball, lets not forget that. We need slightly better wickets wrt the spinners so that they get decent grip from the wicket and don't have to slow it down to extract turn. That should help Zak's reverse swing as well.

That makes sense' date=' but sometimes if you aim too high, you lose quick wickets and you get lower score.[/quote'] True. All I am saying is that India need to get away from the mindset that 300 plus is plenty and defendable. Look at India's batting card yesterday. Apart from Sehwag it was a sequence of solids knocks to anchor the innings. Where was the violence?

If you score 338, you should win 98 out of 100 times. Our problem was not batting. If you had seen iniitially over,s the ball the not coming easily on the bat. Sachin was not timing it. I saw couple of mis hits just eluding fielders. Pitch got better as game progressed. 338 was excellent excellent score. We just had an off day on the field. The sitter dropped by Virat Kohli sums it up our day. If we go with two spinner, we need one spinner bowling most of the time. Instead our captain gave 10 straight overs to part timers. Thats were we lost the game.

If anything, expect our scoring to get lower when we play SAF, AUS, SL and PAK. In short we are fecked.
I don't think so, expect another run fest in Nagpur against Proteas... They will probably drop pieterson and bring in seamer.

SA look fearsome with two world class fast bowlers and spinners who are at the worst are on par with India and their batting order is on par with Indian batting line up.If they can overcome their choking they are the best team. If not for choking they should have won two world cups by now.

When Gambhir fell the total was 180-2 with 20 overs left. A further 158 runs given our resources was poor. Also what exactly is so preposterous about targeting 8-10 runs per over at the start UNTIL you lose a wicket or two?

In a bilateral series, you can bank on your batting to deliver 3 out of 5 times to win you the series but in KO stages one bad game equals game over. In KO tourneys, you need to have the ability to attack both with the bat and the ball :winky:

Let me tell you..we'll do alright in next few games.Just bring ashwin instead of chawla and give sreesanth another chance and yes we'll keep on belting runs with our lineup no matter what opposition we play.
