asterix Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Chawla has no bottle and can't handle pressure. As soon as anyone starts going after him he starts leaking runs and has no comebacks. For a spinner that's a big concern given the fact that spinners are generally most dangerous when batsmen are going after them and playing their shots. Chawla can't even get the tailenders out if they take him on and he cost ud the game against Eng when Eng needed 29 off 2 overs with 3 wkts in hand. His 2 6s were the reason Eng tied the game and even a near decent over would have won us the game. Even Bhajji can't handle pressure..The moment somebody assaults him he starts bowling wides..

But I have seen him take wkts when batsmen take him on. As far as Chawla is concerned it's a foregone conclusion. I remember Bhajji got both Symonds and Hayden in the CB series finals (both the finals) soon after MonkeyGate. If the going gets tough I would back Harbhajan to deliver - not sure I can say the same for Chawla.

Karan114 Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Yeah, this whole Chawla obsession is weird...even getting plucked out from nowhere (hadn't played for India since 2008 bar a couple of T20s) was surprising in the first place, and now, when his bowling is clearly not up to it under pressure, Dhoni is insistent on playing him. Yes, a good leg spinner can be devastating even in ODI cricket but Chawla isn't a good one, certainly not when the pressure is on him. If there was no better alternative one could understand, but Ashwin has done little wrong in his brief career...but there we go.

That's fine if the team management has decided to stick with Chawla..It shouldn't be that Ashwin is pitted against strong teams and Chawla gets all the "easy" matches..

You can't read too much into what Dhoni says publicly. If Dhoni is hiding Ashwin for the tougher games as a surprize element, he won't show his hand by saying "Chawla is only playing right now as we don't want to expose Ashwin too early". Let's see what happens and I trust Dhoni to have a plan in place come knock-outs. If dhoni is one thing, that would be street-smart plus he is a "lucky" captain :smiley:

Dhoni has done similar things with Yuvra, Kohli, Raina and Gambhir when they were struggling. All of them got through the phases of struggling form and have repaid the faith. Yes, Chawla isn't in the same league yet, but playing him against a minnow team wasn't the worst decision he has ever made as many are pointing in this thread.

The team management gives certain clues to us in form of the press/tv and its up to us to piece things together. The reason for piyush's exclusion for over three years was he was a googly bowler with no proper leg break. they would not take him back without this issue being addressed right? You talk as if Chawla is a prodigy. No he is not. its about matchwinners. matchwinners are a precious commodity. if dhoni felt that chawla had patches of brilliance that could be turned into a matchwinner if he becomes more consistent , he is going to back him. from my own reading of chawla's class, i don't disagree. that's the reason dhoni has given him chances. its just the nature of leg spinning business is high risk high returns...pakistan for example conservatively avoided pushing in kaneria for the one dayers, their main leg spinner and instead sticked to afirid the allrounder and one day specialist.but mushtaq played a crucial role in the 1992 world cup.

On a serious note I think Dhoni and the management believe that chawla can repeat his performance of the Australian encounter ( Practice Match) in the upcoming matches

Infact Uthappa had more probability to get selected than this dude. All of a sudden he has become a matchwinner. I am afraid i miss the part where he became a match winner.
