From 4chan's /b boards to many youtube videos, many comments are downright rude, hate filled and insensitive. Does the anonymity of the internet provide an opportunity for people to express their innermost feelings which they might not be able to do so in real life because of lack of conviction or fear of ridicule?
ravishingravi Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Fear, yes. But more importantly judgement in the real world. Here it is almost as if you never said it, but you did. It is not just anger though. I think most emotions are likely to be heightened in an anonymous setup.
vvvslaxman Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 It is largely used as a vent. It brings out the beast in you. Even if some tries to be nice, they eventually break down. On the flip side it brings out the funnier side of you.

It is quite inexplicable, considering interet users are literates and we dont use much of abusive slangs in day to day activities. ( At least to strangers). Just take a look at rediff, ibibo , indiatimes or any Indian youtube video, all you can see is racist and abusive posts. Sad!

ganeshran Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 What is strange is that the voting patterns mostly suggest a centrist bias for the country, but on the Internet, much of the comments seem to suggest extreme left or extreme right positions. I dont understand if there is so much rage, why doesnt it manifest itself in the form of voting, which are also anonymous. Or is it just a case of a small set of people making the loudest noise?

I have been member of many forums for years. But this is my first Indian forum. I always thought that Indian forums would be much more better than those American, French or European forums. In fact, when I was made admin of an American forum, members thought that I'll decrease the freedom a lot. Their general impression was that Indians generally care more about the choice of the word and how others are treated. Maybe I should have shown them some of the Indian forum. :haha: One of those forum which we considered was very less strict now appears to be much more strict now. I don't know how the heavily moderated forums would appear to some members here.

IMO internet rage is prevalent irrespective of the nation.

Because overall we are becoming less social in real life and more on the virtual? How often do you visit a restaurant to see 4 young chaps sitting, everyone on their Smartphones yapping away without so much as conversation between their friends right next. The other day an elderly person was sharing with us in office chat-up how his kids are playing with violent games online and on computer 24*7 but they were recently caught in a fight and chickened out immediately. This certainly has some truth to it. Earlier if you had a problem with someone you told them to face and then duked it out. Most men have been there one time or the other. Today many things that people say online, they would not even comprehend in real life....but they get all macho in online world.

achilles Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Youtube is a Pakistani's best friend. See, the problem is, people are very insecure and have approval issues. They feel they can hate-monger online and it is anonymous too. Hence they spew venom, conveniently knowing that it will not come back to haunt their personal lives. Imagine saying in your real life, half things you say in your e-life. The difference is obvious. The day the internet involves people disclosing their identities hate-mongering will stop.
