They know the target. They know the end game. They picked up Osama from Abottabad Training Academy where he was honorary professor (pun intended). So cant say that they dont know what is end game. ISI (past of Pakistani army) was CIA tool to deal with Russians via Afghans. Now they want to shutdown their ISI business. Same is true for Haqqanis. Someday in future they will ask same for that new Afghani Mafia which is currently being used against Haqqanis

It was always going to be a tough deal. - The definition of victory as complete control over the entire geography of Afghanistan is rather difficult since there hasn't been much of a concept of nationhood. If the US were to leave tomorrow, there's another civil war coming & everyone knows that. - Most importantly, there has to be external support for the resistance. Whether that's Pakistani, Iranian or from the RAW agents can be discussed but the fact remains that there's external support. The Taliban does not internally manufacture arms & ammunition or meet all the needs of running the conflict by itself.

But obsession with India and Kashmir blinded it. To put it simplistically Americans asked you to jump from the top of Eiffel Tower in return they promised to push India from the top of empire estate building. Now since you jumped and somehow survived, they are not ready to pay for most expensive medical treatment which may save your limbs, but are asking to replace them.
