In recent times' date=' there has been very few 125kph bowlers from any Test playing nation in Test cricket who are full time bowlers. All I remember is Mohammad Asif, toward the end of his career, being mainly at 125kph but we can both agree that his skill is unmatched and so he can hardly be used as an example, one way or the other.[/quote'] Mohammad Asif is a tall bowler who can often generate awkward bounce. Also, he can bowl fast-medium spells around 135k as well when the conditions require him to. I repeat that I am not against trying exceptionally talented pacers bowling in the 120s but there should not be too many of them. Our team is often having 3 or 4 pacers who are military meium and don't get ackward bounce. I am against that. Fot the time being I would definitely take PK in all forms of the game but not Vinay or Aravind.

Agreed. But disagree that he should play 'first few matches'. He needs at least a whole season to prove both' date=' his fitness and his ability to have sustained success in the format rather than success in one or two games. Taking him as fifth or sixth bowler is no guarantee that he won't be called up, as injuries can force the hand of selectors. We should always pick our best bowlers, never pick someone just for the experience - though I'm not sure that is what you were saying, it might have been.[/quote'] I think Aaron was included in the Indian team not because he is an exceptional bowler at the moment but because our bowling attack, in the absence of Ishant, had become too one dimentional ...... all were military medium pacers at the moment and there was nobody in the attack who could push the batsman on the back foot if required. Pacers like RP, Munaf ans Sree , who were fast-medium or even quick at their peak, are all bowling very gently these days and rarely hitting the deck hard. You can't have an " attack " with 100% gentle medium pacers.

But we do!!!! :haha: Just based on the performance of the irani trophy game, I'm thinking that umesh is ahead of varun and in line to play some international cricket right away. Hopefully varun will gather steam as the season progresses. good luck to both of them and to team India.

Umesh is a great guy, like a brilliant bloke off the field. I know him personally. But there is something about Varun, that spunk or something, that seems to have caught everyone's attention, apart from his pace.

Umesh also has better FC record than Varun, Varun needs to refine his action and run up a bit, IMO. Needs to work with Lillie mosr eon his action and run up and make it more smooth. He looked a bit cramped.

varun really needs to work on bowling long spells ' date=' his fastest in this match was about 144 and slowest was about 118 or someting ,compare that to vinny whose quickest was 130 and slowest was around 118. so varun is losing about 25 k where as vinny about 12k[/quote'] u misunder stood Speeds 118 is Varuns special slow ball.... Ask resident xperts

THIS BEING THE FIRST GAME THIS SEASON ,ALSO HOW MANY INDIA PLAYERS HAVE WE SEEN BOWLING IN 140 'S IN DOMESTIC GAMES,Both bowlers have excellent seam position at release, can extract good bounce out of nowhere, are fit and young , we all know they can bowl between range 135 to 153 highest.Yes they bowled faster in their first spell then slowed down , both also seamed the ball on ocassions. They are both selected for cHallenger and England games, did not give their all, based on the evidence of Ipl and games played last season ,Domestic and in Umesh's case India games they have the ingredients, potential , lets hope for the best , with selectors and captains support they can only improve from here, look at ISHANT, compare his first games to his best bowling , nowhere close, we need to be patient, also not select merely interms of age being criteria , let us use all the talent we have not just 20 some players, VRV Singh , Gony,Pankaj Singh , Sudeep TyAGI , sHIKHAR dHAWAN , wASEEM JAFFER,iRFAN PATHAN ,even Akash Chopra, see Australia, pick the right players for right format , if player has talent then age should not be a factor although hopefully players like Badrinath and Saha, VKumar dont waste good players spots.Unadkat , Mithun , nowhere good enuff but can improve

What worries me is that Varun was between 128 to 135K in the entire second innings though I wud want to share that he maintained Good Line n length all through.... It totally seems he has been pressurised to focus on line n length.....if this happens Varun will again become a MUNAF version 2..... Even yadav was between 131K to 139K in second ininings but with a flat pitch 131K to 139K is Acceptable but Varun was like totally slower than Yadav though Varun wud suddenly throw in a bouncer which looked 140K and unplayable showing his INTERNATIONAL class though on speedometer it wud be in early 130"s. I m kinda worried that Varun does not go the MUNAF way.....

Varun needs to understand that his future lies on being Fast not to becom a line n length trundler... We have some Immaculate line n length TRUNDLERS in dozens ... To name a few Joginder sharma- Great line n length Slow trundler. VK- Great line n length Medium Trundler. S arvind- Great Line n length Medium Trundler...he was thrashed for 69 runs in 4 overs ysterday. PK- Trundler Emperror- Swing GURU...people in UP worship Sir Praveen Kumar as this guy can swing n turn the bowl like a Spinner n these PK fans are not at all surprised by PK"s marginal Test Success, actually they are shocked as they expected him to actually ROCK. I also believe that if a trundler is to be picked than PK is the first Choice. Pankaj Singh- Kanitkar feels Pankaj wud have exploited helpful Pitch and turned the match on its head ...though I wud totally differ, Pankaj was really lucky not too have played as all Rajasthan bowlers are waking up in the middle of the night now a days shocked by the thrashind Given by Dhawan and Rahane. Dhawan actually Murdered them....selectros wud now be sure never to dream od CHAHAR......international dreams of all Rajasthan bowlers will only remain dreams.

didnt look like a cutter to me but that was his speeds on the 5th day looked very stiff
He needs to bowl more and more and concentrate on pace which is his forte rather than anything and try to be accurate with pace. Increase stamina by bowling more in the nets and exercising in the gym. I would advise only this to him.

Umesh Yadav has improved as a bowler in the last 12 months. Compared to how he bowled in the last Irani Trophy, he definitely is a better bowler and in case Ishant isn't available, could be looked at even for test matches. Aaron is perhaps where Yadav was last year. A full season of domestic season playing Ranji trophy and then the Duleep trophy will help him. More he bowls, better he will get. Looked to be bowling under a lot of pressure in the Irani match as if he was trying to prove a point. In the process he lost his rhythm and confidence too. Some decisions didn't go his way either and there catches dropped, and when he beat the batsmen for pace forcing a false shot, the lobs fell in vacant areas. Overall, not disappointed with what I saw. What would be unfortunate is if they are picked in the 15 and then warm the benches without getting matches. If they are not to be picked for the ODIs/Tests final 11, they would be better off playing Ranji Trophy. Don't want to see them go the Sudeep Tyagi way. Was with the team for 6-8 months in 2009 without getting too many games and has been discarded ever since.

I feel subtle modulation in bowling action helped him attain accuracy and movement in the air and off the pitch. He worked on his landing which is more close to the stumps now in comparison to what he had before. I think he should debut in test against WI.

He has only gone for over 3 runs per over in 2 of the 11 innings in which he has bowled.
Praveen kumar has done well in Wi and eng where conditions suited him but his struggles when picthes are flat are well known specially in odis in india where he averages 67 and he got the new ball and did not bowl in the last few overs ,he will get a long rope in the team as he is dhoni favourite but the harm dhoni is doing to indian cricket will out weight the positives if this continues .i am expecting arvind ,p.k.v.k in first odi

i would be really disappointing if umesh will not play ahead of likes of VK and Arvind. He is much improved bowler and he should be given license to go for a full monty with pace. Varon is raw and has to spend some time in domestic circuit. May be he has to take a leaf out of Umesh and bring some changes to his action. Now, he doesn't have a control on his line and length.

Got to see these 2 youngsters bowling in tandum in the first ODI against WI and Umesh looks better than aaron. Umesh has swing and consistently bowling at 145 kmph

Posted

Umesh looks better then Varun and has shown fantastic improvement , but he is also older and has been with the Indian team for a longer time, Varun is not bowling at his best but we need to give him some time,I have seen him swing , seam and get very good bounce at consistent pace around 145 k's,once he feels he belongs at this level he will look different , that is what has happened to Umesh

Umesh Yadav should be our #1 bowler, even ahead of Zak. The guy has pace, accuracy and more importantly control. I expect him to our spearhead for the next decade, barring any injuries.

Varun is an unusual bowler. Very skiddy, could be very useful for the death and middle overs of an ODI. I do have reservations about his Test ability, at the moment, though.
