vvvslaxman Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Definitely IPL. But we cannot deny that he has lot of accuracy for a leggie . It is a gut selection i must say. Mishra was miserable. Chawla despite enough confidence didn't really show consistent progress. Both of them are slow through the air. Rahul Sharma is more like Kumble . I am all for giving a chance to a different type of leggie.
BERGKAMP Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 imagine ashiwin and sharma bowling together, they must be the tallest pair of spinners bowling in tandem ever. i think the poms would 5hit their pants at the prospect :giggle:

Good chance of both playing tomorrow B->
rajmarie Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Nothing wrong IMO. Both Chawla & Mishra have bowled crap & blown their chances. Rahul needs the encourgement. It will be good for him to share the dressing room with experienced players like Dravid, SRT, VVS....plus bowl in practice to these guys & maybe pick up a couple of tricks. Indian selectors though need to identify long term spinner for India & not play musical chairs. Every new series have atleast 1 different spinner playing (besides Harbhajan in the past)
ViruRulez Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 We'll go with two spinners but Ashwin and Ojha will get to play as they have prior international exposure. Ashwin and Ojha are also better to be honest but it might not be a bad idea to give Sharma a chance in case Ojha fails in the first test
IKnowU Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Ashwin and Ojha are also better to be honest but it might not be a bad idea to give Sharma a chance in case Ojha fails in the first test Since when was Ashwin suddenly our star bowler? Ojha can keep it tight and put on pressure even if he doesnt pick up wickets. Ojha is the only bowler that hasnt been kicked out of this this because of form, but rather for some bs reasons. :headshake:
Manny_Pacquiao Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 10 matches is nothing. you can't judge a player from what he did in such a small number of matches. that said, i have no problem with picking someone on talent alone. classic fletcher.
skindia Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Rahul Sharma is Quota Player as Replacement of harbhajan.
skindia Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Rahane is Quota Player as Replacement of Zaheer. Mukund Out as Ashwin IN.
Number Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Rahane is Quota Player as Replacement of Zaheer. Mukund Out as Ashwin IN. :haha:
vvvslaxman Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 aint it hypocritical the selectors said, getting into test team is only on the basis of fc carrer, ipl will not be given weightage for the same.... how is rahul sharma selected? his fc records are bs Ashwin also got picked because of IPL. They are hoping for him to click as having a leggie is a huge advantage for any test side.
NareshK Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Ashwin also got picked because of IPL. They are hoping for him to click as having a leggie is a huge advantage for any test side. There would have been a lot of criticism if he had been picked just because of IPL in Tests. He has also been doing well in ODIs, getting wickets and maintaining a good economy rate. So he deserves a chance in Tests. Not so sure about Rahul Sharma. He hasnt even made his ODI debut yet and he barely played 10 games in FC cricket. His selection is obviously a gamble.
rkt.india Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Ashwin also got picked because of IPL. They are hoping for him to click as having a leggie is a huge advantage for any test side. I like Rahul Sharma's bowling style. As a leg spinner, a bowler needs to have some specific ingredients such as big turn like Warne and McGill with good enough accuracy or if not big turn then accuracy and ability to extract bounce and can be quicker through the air. A bowler who turns more will always be slower through the air where as a bowler whose forte is accuraccy and bounce with less turn will always be quicker through the air. Rahul's height 6'4" will also help him doing that. We had Amit Mishra and Chawla before, but problem with both of them were not enough turn and bite and they were not very accurate too. Other than that very slow of the pitch as well, especially Mishra. I still feel Chawla can be better than Mishra in tests, if he continuously works on his bowling and improve his leg break.

Apart from Bhargav bhat and to some extent Iqbal abdulla no spinner stands out in domestic cricket. Two leggies we tried out have not done well. They cannot keep adding left arm spinners like Bangladesh team. yes it is a gamble. But they have to take.
bajrang Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 i have had it with those midget leggies, turn dont work in subcontinent, its the bounce that will get you wickets ask warne, with his height rahul should do well, pishu and mishu had been such a disappointment after their initial promises.
gakgupta Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I have seen this guy in irani rophy and looks completely under-cooked. He is a work in progress. He has a long way to go to even reach mishra or chawla standards. But i like the selection. They have realized that mishra and chawla cannot improve. Mishra was given enough chances and he cannot even work out his no-ball problems and never looked comfortable in international arena. Chawla was under the radar for quite some time and no improvement at all. So why not encourage a new leggie.....He will not make a debug in any time soon but the selection will defintely encourage him and motivate him.. I can't guess the truth but i would like to believe this....
King Tendulkar Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Rahane is Quota Player as Replacement of Zaheer. Mukund Out as Ashwin IN. It does make you wonder Like Vinay Kumar in odi team, quota move maybe
