I had an argument with some a guy on a flight lol Lets rule out that Ganguly was obviously a better leader as he was a successful captain as well he could bowl reasonably descent medium. Fielding I would say is a wash between the two. So clearly if you look at all these aspects along with batting Sourav is ahead. How about strictly in terms of ODI batting? Again its an apples to orange comparison for test as they played in different positions. One thing I would give Saeed Anwar is that he was huge against Australia as well as India. Not just a minnow basher (not saying dada was! just saying). Overall I'd give Anwar the edge batting in ODIs but Ganguly overall. Comments?

Ganguly at least has some decent innings against quality attacks like his 140 odd against Aus at Gabba in 2003 and his odi knocks against SA. Don't think Anwar had anything to show other than his Sharjah innings.

In odis Ganguly had plenty of good knocks against almost all the major nations, and especially SA who had the likes of Donald, Pollock. Kallis etc. in their bowling lineup. As for Tests his knock in the 1st Test against Aussies in Aus (Waugh's farewell series) was amazing. He came in when India were in trouble and set the tone for rest of the series.

If stats are better for Ganguly then how come Anwar was a better batsman, especially with Anwar's poor record against SA and Aus? Take out his innings on flat tracks of Sharjah and he doesn't have much to show as a batsman. And the reason Anwar only played 55 tests in 11 years is coz he wasn't good enough to play more.

If he only played 55 tests in 11 years that means he has poor fitness.I still remember most of the times he scored a fifty batting first he used substitute fielders.Fitness is such an important attribute for sports persons as lack of it means you are not good enough
