Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the opening of a gymnasium here on Wednesday, Kapil said while Ravi Shastri retired from the sport at the age of 29, Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya went on to play till the age of 42. Sachin has served the country well, even though he is nearing 40, Kapil said. As long as a player performs well, there are no complaints, it is only when the performance takes a dip, questions are being asked, he said. Interestingly, the veteran allrounder had earlier said Sachin should have retired from cricket after India's World Cup victory in April last year. On the issue of the alleged rift between Virender Sehwag and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Kapil said, There was no controversy, it was just a matter of difference of opinion. When asked about Dhoni's comment that senior players were slow on the field, Kapil said their slowness will be overlooked if they perform well with the bat.

He had become a liability in ODIs and was hugely responsible for India being knocked out of the '92 World Cup with his pathetically slow batting. Perhaps, he could have been persisted with a bit more in tests but in those days test and ODI selections usually went hand in hand. Moreover, he never really put up any great performances in domestics and county cricket after being dropped to warrant a comeback.

I am old enough to remember how tuk tuk Shastri would have made Misbah ul Haq appear as the most ferociously aggressive batsman!... I also remember one of Shastri's ODI nnings where he made 16 runs in 64 balls :haha: Plus the garland of chappals over his photo etc etc.. all pushed shastri out of the team.

Well, it was not case of being kicked out entirely but combination of being kicked out and having a troublesome knee and probably not enough interest. After abysmally poor tour to SA, which had followed very average WC, he was dropped from team. He played in domestic after that for sometime and led Mumbai to one of their Ranji titles. Key point is, if he was given a chance in England series in 1993 at home, he would have resurrected his career the way Azhar resurrected his captaincy career after having very poor 2-3 years in beginning and getting almost removed. Wish we had dropped Azhar from captaincy at that point of time and we wouldn't have had this blemish of having a captain who fixed matches.

singhprakash72 Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I think after the SA 92 tour Shastri was dropped for home series against Eng after which he took retirement decision at once. His performance in Aus , WC 92 and SA was under scanner and his relationship with Azhar also hit bottom...there was no way he was coming back. I agree he could have played test for a few more years but in ODI he was liability...he is a better version of Kambli....if he controlled his off field activities he could have replaced Kapil as next captain and much better than Azhar.

That was another pathetic piece of batting. In the Australia match from '92, when he came back on after the rain break he started giving the charge to Hughes and would end up blocking the ball to the bowler or mid on.

My memory of Ravi Shastri is chasing the ball all the way to the boundary. It would always beat him to it but he kept on running till the end. Never dived, never stopped, never put his foot down or anything but always ran to the boundary. :((
