He said something like "If I had to play another Test for a farewell, it would not be for the right reasons". And then, when asked whether he was leaving the game better than when he had come into it, he said "That is for others to decide". And then, when asked whether he would play first class cricket for Karnataka, he said "no", because he feels there are a lot of good players right now and he does not want to come in the way of a youngster's place, or something like that. Anybody who did not have respect for Dravid BEFORE the press conference (and I don't think there were many), would certainly have respect for him now. Though there are some incorrigible people out there, of course.

Manny_Pacquiao Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 came about 3 years too late. people call him selfless, but in reality, the guy just blocked a youngster's place for a number of years and played a huge role in delaying india's transition. and unlike tendulkar and laxman, he was in wretched form for the best part of the last 4-5 years. better late than never tho. indian cricketers are incapable of retiring when they have peaked and invariably play on for too long...late 30s is almost a given. wouldnt surprise me if tendulkar or laxman go on for another year, even if they arent making runs. makes me hate the gutless selectors even more. like dravid said in his press conference, "at times they had more faith in me than i had in myself"...LOL. sums up the way our cricket is run

An average of 70+ with 3 hundreds when no other batsman could put bat to ball including your favorite.
Manny_Pacquiao Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 ^ Actually' date=' Dravid retired pretty close to his peak - the England series will not be replicated by an Indian batsman for 10 more years, if that's not retiring close to the peak then I don't know what is?[/quote'] the last series india played was in australia, not in england. and dravid's final series ended with him setting the record for most consecutive clean bowleds. well, i guess if that's the 'peak' you are referring to, then i agree, he retired close to his peak. i would say his 'peak' was 2002, when he got 4 str8 hundreds and he was pretty much a run machine from that year 'til about late 2006. mukul kesavan was right in saying he was our best batsmen from 2001-2006. but, nobody, and i mean nobody, ever talks about how **** this guy was afterwards and until that one-off series in england. i have pointed this out millions of times before, but it falls on deaf ears. from the south africa tour in 06, 'til the south africa tour in '11, he played almost 50 test matches for an average that didn't even hit 40. i dont even need to look this up on cricinfo, because i remember it by heart now LOL. his batting skills had deteriorated ages ago, that is undeniable. and its reflected in those stats. you dont average that low over 4 years and 50 test matches unless you are past your best. any notable innings he played in this period were on dead pitches or against minnows. 177 vs SL at ahmedabad, 190 vs NZ nagpur, that 100 against SA in sehwag's 319 game, the hundreds in bongladesh, etc. the cheapest of cheap runs. h

You don't just dump someone who has been the best batsman in the Indian team comprising of Tendulkar, Sehwag, Laxman, Ganguly after a few poor series from 2002-2007. 2. You give him a few chances to pull through and he did on a couple of crucial occasions in the middle of the lean trot - scored a hundred with the team at 30/4 and scored a hundred at Mohali. Yeah home innings but just enough to give him a rope. 3. WI tracks were not easy and was instrumental in winning the series there. 4. Had among the best series that any batsman can have - top scoring and doing it freely while the remaining line up is struggling to put bat to ball. 5. Had a poor series in Australia when as you say, and I agree, his technique was exposed at the age and retired immediately. So, what's so disgraceful about the entire episode?

LOL. i dont know how to respond to that. selective amnesia or ignorance? who knows. whats disgraceful is that he had peaked ages ago and kept on playing. dravid is yet another in the long line of indians that have no clue when to retire and inevitably go on for too long. if u want to think he retired at the right time, despite averaging about 12 pts under his final career average for about half a decade prior, then i havent got anything else left to say.
