Rahul Dravid retires from International cricket

Yes, he could have retired at the peak, it doesn't mean you have to biatch and moan about it now. :hahaha: One lil problem with the absolute peak, you don't really know it till you hit some lows after the peak. :winky: Join us in applauding his service to Indian cricket. :two_thumbs_up:

If that 12 points still happens to be much better than anyone else could give in challenging conditions like England, I'll take it. The '11 series in England will forever be remembered as one of the best batting displays against quality seam and swing bowling by Dravid - your rants out here will take nothing away from 3 centuries in 4 test matches. from the south africa tour in 06, 'til the south africa tour in '11, he played almost 50 test matches for an average that didn't even hit 40. i dont even need to look this up on cricinfo, because i remember it by heart now LOL.

yup very similar to 3 years slump by Sachin. between Pakistan series in 2004 and 2007 series against SA. After his 194.. in the next 23 tests he averaged 36. That includes a 248 not out against Bangladesh.

Dravid's real turn around was his century at Mohali against England. That is when fans had lost hope on him. From that point not many actually questioned his position. He was starting to look better.

No you have to split this into two.. He was so terrible till MOhali 100. He averaged like 29 in 23 tests. Then in the next 20 tests he averaged 54. You have clumped two phases of his career together which make it look worse than actually it is. He was extremely bad for a period.

i disagree i think he just became a minnow basher afterwards. failed on the two tours of SL, failed against australia at home, and south africa away. those were the big series india played between england 2008 and south africa 2011. he cashed in on bangladesh and new zealand though. in fact, his best runs throughout this whole time were against bangladesh, new zealand, west indies...with nothing to show for against the better sides. its a bit like saying how tendulkar's overall average was still high during his slump, but the reality is that he just cashed in on bangladesh and had a few big scores interspersed between numerous failures. england 2011 was a one-off for dravid in a long line of failures, and thats not just an opinion, its a fact that is borne out by the numbers. but its up to the individual to choose how they want to remember him and how they view the timing of his retirement.

Against Australia total of 4 innings. 77, 21 not out, 1 and 13.. seriously you consider a huge failure? Anyway.. Dravid developed a bad habit of getting out left arm seamer at that point. Chasing the wide ones. It continued in SA as well. I think he became a different man in the WI tour. He carried that form into England series.

The BCCI on Tuesday felicitated 'The Wall' Rahul Dravid, who bid adieu to international cricket earlier this year. The glittering felicitation ceremony that started at 7:30 PM at Mumbai plush Taj Lands End Hotel, was witnessed by the whose who of cricketing fraternity. The whole of Indian cricket team was present during the occasion that even saw Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni pay rich tributes to his former team-mate. Dravid had announced his retirement from international cricket on March 9th after a long and glorious cricket career that stretched for 16 years. He had already retired from one-day and Twenty20 cricket after the tour of England. Incidentally, he only featured in one and only T20 match that he played against England during the tour and even before he had stepped into bat in the match, he had announced his retirement for T20 and ODIs. Dravid played 164 Tests to become the second highest run getter in Test history with 13,288 runs, only second to Sachin Tendulkar who has amassed 15,470 runs till date. In ODIs, Dravid aggregated 10,889 runs from 344 games. He is one of the 10 players in the world and one of three Indians to be in the 10,000 runs club. He reached the mark in February 2007. Accolades such as "huge pillar" of Indian cricket "greatest number 3 bat" and one of the "best cricketers and ambassadors" poured in from his former and current teammates who paid glowing tributes in a star-studded felicitation function here. Former captains Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and current skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni were among those who spoke at the function attended by a galaxy of former cricketers, BCCI officials and other dignitaries. While describing him as a "huge pillar", Ganguly said Dravid, who announced his retirement from international cricket on March 9, was a great ambassador of the game. "He was one huge pillar through which Indian cricket went forward. He is one of the greatest batsmen not just in India but in world cricket," Ganguly said. "You (Dravid) played in an era when Indian cricket went from strength to strength." Ganguly rated his 180 against Australia at the Eden Gardens in 2001 as Dravid's best knock. "As far his best knocks are concerned, there are bound to be debates. But as I had said always, the one at Eden Gardens is the best. Though I rate the knocks overseas highly, I think the knock at Eden with VVS (Laxman) not only established him in world cricket but was also important for Indian cricket. "I am happy that he could take the decision on his own. His contribution to Indian cricket isn't finished with the number of runs he has scored or the catches he has taken, he is a great ambassador." Ganguly said he was lucky to have Dravid as his deputy when he was the captain of the Indian team. "I was lucky to have you as vice-captain for five years, the work you and John (Wright) did." Kumble, with whom Dravid combined to effect a number of dismissals, felt it would be difficult for anyone to emulate the cricketer. "Its been a great partnership with you Rahul. When we look back, we can gladly say we will only remember the wonderful memories. I just spoke about the 55 catches you have taken (off my bowling). "When his first son Samit was born, somebody sent an sms message saying caught Dravid b Kumble. But his son cannot be Rahul Dravid. It would be easier for his son to take take two wickets than score the number of runs he has scored, just like it would be easier for my son to have a batting average of 18," Kumble said. "All of us know how he is as a person. During the evening-outs on tours he would know exactly what I hated. He was at times lost in his own thoughts, probably thinking about how he would bat the next day or analysing the day's proceedings. I know in the next couple of months he would be busy with the IPL. I tell you its going to get busier." A great friend and a colleague. "I will definitely be missing you in the dressing room. When I first met you as a 16-year-old, playing for Karnataka Under-19, I was impressed with your passion for the game and your style. We then went on to play for India and I cherish our relationship that blossomed over the years. "In 1996, Rahul made his debut at Lord's where he got out after scoring 95. He must have been really disappointed not to have got his century. But he proved how much effort, hard work and pride he puts into his game when he scored his century at Lord's in 2011.
