Number Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Herschelle Gibbs on Saturday rated Rohit Sharma ahead of his India teammate Virat Kohli and said the duo could be real match winners for the country in the days to come. Sharma scored a blistering 109 not out and shared an undefeated 167-run stand (from 106 balls) with Gibbs (66 not out) to guide Mumbai Indians to a comfortable 27-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL match here, which ended the home team's six-match winning run. Having seen Sharma from close quarters in their past association with Deccan Chargers, Gibbs said Sharma was technically more sound. Describing himself as a "fan" of Sharma, the veteran South African said: "I have seen him grow over the years. It's been five years. His cricket has definitely gone forward. Nobody questions his talent. "Virat Kohli is another one. Definitely they have taken the cricket to another level. But as far as talent and technique is concerned, I think Rohit is a little bit better than Virat." "The more Rohit plays these sort of innings, his temperament would get better. His self-belief would also increase. It's good for India that Rohit Sharma performs. "If he performs consistently along with Kohli then the two of them can be match winners for India both in Tests and ODIs and in Twenty20s. It's good to see him play these sort of innings." "I and Rohit had a good understanding, been with him a couple of years with Deccan so we got a good momentum upfront." "My job was to support him and ensure that he does not give his wicket away. He is good enough to get 100s," Gibbs said. Putting Sharma in the league of Gayle and Warner, he added: "Chris Gayle is showing the way as well as David Warner. But Rohit Sharma is as good as them. He is more technically sound. I am glad that he is getting runs. It was clean hitting and not slogging. I was happy to be at the other end." Gibbs, who recovered from an injury to play his first match for the Mumbai Indians, said it was nice to start with some runs under belt. "It's been a long time obviously. I hadn't been into too much cricket. Only the last couple days knocked a few balls. It's a nice way to start today. We lost Sachin (Tendulkar) early on but we needed a good start and Rohit and I decided to do that today." He further said it was a good toss to win by Harbhajan Singh. "It's good that we won the toss. It doesn't get any easier. I think we allowed our bowlers to settle down with the line and length." With Delhi and Kolkata almost assured of playoffs berths, it would be a race for the remainder two spots, Gibbs said. "We have to push quite hard in the next three games. It's very much like a horse race and anything can happen." Asked about Tendulkar's stumping, he said: "I was surprised. I thought Sachin would get the benefit of the doubt. May be another day he would have been given not out." On mystery bowler Sunil Narine he said: "I faced him only a couple of balls. You got to watch him quite closely like Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan). "In T20, it's a fearless approach irrespective of who is bowling. You just need to go out there and pull the trigger. We did well today. We will again face him next week. We will see how it goes." http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/ipl-2012/news/Rohit-ahead-of-Virat-in-terms-of-talent-and-technique-Gibbs/articleshow/13112813.cms Rohit has tricked Warne, Moody, Ian Chappel and now Gibbs..:giggle:

For me it appears clearly that the headlines of TOI or whatever News source is written to look controversial and generate attention. :finger: to them if it is the case. Virat is a full-time player now with captaincy reckoning and Rohit is searching for a place in XI :giggle: Talk about talking about Virat and Rohit in the same line... Rohit will probably be feeling so much like :girly1:
vvvslaxman Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Have been hearing something like this for the past 5 years where is "rejult"
Malcolm Merlyn Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Here we go............the famous......Tailunt is at it again.........
Ultimate_Game Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 As a wise man once said "Potential is the most common thing in the world". Unless Rohit gets it right and starts producing at intl level there's no point discussing how talented he is. However, the selectors didn't help him much by not giving him a break in the Test side till now. By the way didn't Gibbs say in his autobiography that Dravid was mentally fragile
Pagalpanti Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Well surely so many players cant be wrong about him. When he comes off he surely looks one of the most elegant players around and fearless as well but very inconsistent. Lets just hope he isn't India's umar akmal "super talented" but no results. :P
daryl1985 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 He has more natural talent than Kohli IMO. However, Kohli's temperament (when building an innings), work ethic and determination set him apart from Rohit. Talent alone, only gets you so far. In terms of pure natural talent, Rahul Dravid is not in the top 3 that India have ever produced. But in terms of achievement over his career, i think that only SRT and Sunil Gavaskar can be placed ahead of him.

Even he never had the hype Rohit is having now. But yuvraj has achieved so much in his career.
Old guy Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 if you are talking about playing breathless shots and branding it as natural talent Yuvraj will swallow every goddamn Rohit in india. nobody can play shots like him. Even he never had the hype Rohit is having now. Manny_Pacquiao Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Well surely so many players cant be wrong about him. When he comes off he surely looks one of the most elegant players around and fearless as well but very inconsistent. Lets just hope he isn't India's umar akmal "super talented" but no results. :P ukmal is a talentless hack, mentioning this guy in the same breath as rohit is a crime. rohit is a sick talent, the guy has all the shots in the book. his issues are more to do with attitude and determination - he doesn't seem to have the same attitude that kohli does, doesn't take failure as seriously. i think he is in a comfort zone and takes things for granted, knowing how good he is and how he is virtually guaranteed a place in the team because everybody is always soft on him. nobody else can change that - you could drop him, but he would go back to FC and score a shitload of runs like he always does and we 'll be back to square one. hopefully he realises that he has a responsibility to do well when playing for the country and grows the **** up. otherwise, the moment india finds some other quality batsmen - imagine rahane or somebody else scoring big and establishing himself - rohit will be forgotten and he could get the 'kambli treatment', i.e dropped forever. by then it will be too late.
Ultimate_Game Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 close analogy is how Pakistanis hyped Umar Akmal as the next best thing to happen in cricket. Rohit is still better than Akmal. I simply don't get the hype about Akmal and he looks a slightly better version of the likes of Afridis & Imran Nazirs. He has been playing regularly for the past 3-4 years and hasn't done anything. Rohit on the other hand has still to break into the Indian team and hopefully with Dravid's retirement will finally get a long run in the Indian team. Hope VVS is kicked out and SRT decides to call it a day soon so that likes of Rahane and Pujara (or Mukund) can also be given a chance.

Kohli does not have the temperament and talent to play such innings in T20s. While Rohit is less suited to play such innings ODIs. While Rohit is more suite to tests which he has not played yet.
gaurav92 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Agree. But performance wise Virat is miles ahead of Rohit :icflove:
rkt.india Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 if you are talking about playing breathless shots and branding it as natural talent Yuvraj will swallow every goddamn Rohit in india. nobody can play shots like him. Even he never had the hype Rohit is having now. But yuvraj has achieved so much in his career. Rohit plays as good a shots as Yuvraaj, probably even better especially against genuine pace. Yuvraaj used to look uncomfortable against genuine pace and short balls. Rohit's hooks are better than Yuvraaj's. Yuvraaj was more powerful hitter than Rohit.
Precambrian Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Nohit and allhype Sharma... What's this indicator of talent? "Looking poised and elegant" while playing a cover drive on a flat wicket on a long hop? BS Virat has proven his mettle already in ODIs and also has done not too badly in the whites either. Not using talent is what one use to describe a person like Yuvraj Singh - he has proven in ODIS that he has got the shots, the grit and determination - but somehow did not display the same in tests. For Nohit, the chap's still to show that in ODIs, his hype stemming from a few performances in the IPL. And don't give me his FC averages. There are a dozen youngsters out there averaging more than 50 in FC cricket.
sarcastic Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Look at the difference. Rohit plays such innings in T20' date=' while Kohli does in ODIs. However, I do agree with vvvslaxman's point when he talks about how much UV achieved and in comparison Rohit hardly did until now.
vvvslaxman Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Rohit plays as good a shots as Yuvraaj' date= probably even better especially against genuine pace. Samples that Rohit got is very very few.. you could literally count. He has produced equally mediocre innings like he was struggling in England in world T20 agianst England on Lords slope before getting cleaned up by Sidebottom. He has lot of issues outside the off stump much like Mahela. It is not just because of temperament he fails. he also has technical issues. I have seen him play down the wrong line very often. Also he doesn't keep the ball down as well as either yuvraj or kohli. He is airy fairy.
