Narendra Modi's elevation hits BJP’s capacity to rally opposition parties

NEW DELHI: The emergence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as BJP's presumptive prime ministerial candidate seems to have inadvertently created a relatively productive start to the monsoon session.There have been some skirmishes and brief adjournments in the first two days but it has been very much unlike the second leg of the budget session. Government and leaders of Opposition parties have reiterated their desire for fruitful debates, discussion and lawmaking. BJP is even engaged with the government on the Insurance Bill, even while giving up floor coordination with non-NDA Opposition. "BJP's projection of Narendra Modi and the party embarking on a hardcore Hindutva plank have resulted in it losing allies like JD(U). It is clear whenever BJP moves into hard-core communal agenda, the party gets more and more isolated. We have no plans for a floor-coordination with Modi-led BJP. Understandably, BJP this time is not even trying for a floor co-ordination with us or other non-NDA opposition parties," CPM Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury told ET. CPI's D Raja added, "BJP is now not only led by Modi but even openly driven by the RSS and its communal agenda. There is no question of us coordinating with the Modi-led BJP inside or outside Parliament. During the session the Left will raise issues like anti-poor economic policies, the questionable pricing policy of gas, food bill, inflation etc. We have no plans to have a floorstrategy with BJP. We also don't share BJP's sectarian approach on issues like Uttarakhand tragedy and the Bodh Gaya incident. There may be some issues that all Opposition parties may raise. That is only coincidental." Targeted by UPA and non-NDA parties over elevation of Modi, BJP has lost its capacity to rally the entire Opposition against the government as it did in previous sessions, another leader said. "The fact elections are only eight months away have also made many parties conscious of the company they keep," he said. This new political choreography was visible on Tuesday afternoon when BJP found itself alone in protesting the 'toothless statement' of Defence Minister AK Antony. Though it forced an adjournment, Left, SP, BJD, JD(U), RJD, TDP, JD(S), DMK and even Trinamool Congress and AIADMK looked the other way.

Focus on good governance not enough, Narendra Modi needs to connect emotionally to win masses

Narendra Modi is doing everything to win the general elections for the BJP. He has performed remarkably well as a chief minister, seems to have the right ideas, and has tremendous support in the increasingly relevant Indian middle class. Given the widespread dissatisfaction with the Congress, numerous scandals and the lack of national alternatives, Modi should have an easy walk to the top. This is certainly not the case. So where is he going wrong? The answer lies not in logic, but in emotions. Political parties divide the voters based on caste and religion. It suits the privileged few in each segment. The more important fault line between rich and poor, privileged and others, is obscured in the process. However, this latter segmentation suits Modi better. Modi is unique because not only is he well suited to present his case for good governance to all, he has an underprivileged background to connect emotionally with the large group of underprivileged cutting across the traditional divisions. However, the focus of team Modi seems purely on good governance using rational arguments. It is a mistake. EMOTIONAL CONNECT Modi does not come across as a common man - although he should. His childhood work in a tea shop and his journey from the bottom of the society to the top ought to inspire and strengthen faith in our democracy. He has defied tremendous odds to succeed in a world where family ties and other connections matter more than anything else. Why then is he unwilling to define the political contest on emotional grounds? Marketing plays a critical role in politics. Any good marketer will know how important emotions are in driving purchases. People vote to "purchase" their leadership during an election, and therefore, both rational and emotional appeals to "sell" a candidate work best. Modi's reliance primarily on rational arguments for good governance might be enough for the middle-class voters, but the middle class in not yet enough to win the elections. Other voters need a different approach. Modi has to connect with them emotionally to succeed. BJP has still not learned from the failed India Shining campaign. The party faces a similar situation now with its 'Modi Shining' campaign. Sporadic attempts to inject the Ayodhya issue to raise emotions will fail for many reasons. First, politicians are no longer credible on this issue. Second, Modi has no visible connection with this issue. And finally, it reminds people of BJP's broken promises - irrespective of the reasons. In the war for minds, those who have to explain the footnotes lose the argument. Other attempts to raise emotions on religious grounds would meet the same fate. Supporters of Hindutva will vote for Modi anyway. Neutral voters and others will make a difference, and Hindutva alienates them. Congress is smarter. Since it has little to show for governance, it wants to ensure that Modi remains mired in the emotional issue of 2002 riots making any logic irrelevant. It raises the issue of apology for the 2002 riots, the Ishrat Jahan issue, the puppy issue... Cold logic would make these issues irrelevant, but cold logic rarely gets votes. Emotions do, and Congress knows that. MAKEOVER FOR MODI So what can Modi do about it? He can start with serious efforts to connect with the voters emotionally. He must paint himself as a common man with a disadvantaged background who understands the problems of the people, has worked hard to reach where he is, can be trusted, and most of all cares. Others are out to destroy him because he is upsetting the cozy system of connections and corruption of the elite. To be able to do this, his team must emphasise who Modi is as a person, the small things in his life that can help common people identify with him. In addition, he has to show that he is above divisions such as caste and religion. His record of never seeking votes based on caste would be relatively easy to establish. However, he will have to work harder on the issue of communalism. Keeping quiet about it will not help. He could take the issue head on to portray that he has regretted 2002 riots and wants to move on, but others won't let him for political reasons. His success among Muslims in Gujarat, and the fact that riots have taken place elsewhere in the country with little justice for the victims have to be interwoven in the process to make his claim credible. Modi has tried many times to address this issue in the past-particularly in Gujarat. However, the message is yet to be absorbed by the entire country. Interestingly, the shrill onedimensional campaign against him opens up an opportunity for him to play the victim. To win the war, the battles have to be fought at the level of the common man. He must define the debate in terms of "privileged and corrupt" versus "others." That is emotional. Perception drives voters. The persona of Modi has to reflect his message. Clean cut dresses, rare smiles, elite company, visible security, all dilute the message that Modi is one of the "others". He has to establish himself as a warm and caring leader of all who can also perform like a CEO, and not as a CEO who is trying to be a leader of the masses. I have been reading some of the responses online to media news by modi supporters. I have a genuine concern that the kind of language these idiots use online to respond to people, what kind of animal are these? I tell you what. I might have been RSS guy, a strong BJP supporter but I have never imagined that I will be on the side of those who use such a filthy language to express their views. I want MODI to address this in his next speech to these low life animals.

The Opposition Gujarat Parivartan Party on Saturday called chief minister Narendra Modi’s pre-poll promise a sham, claiming that RTI documents have nailed his lies regarding financial packages to each district. “We had sought details from each district collector regarding the special financial package the chief minister had announced for their respective districts as part of his Sadbhavna Mission. But it turned out that the announcements were only on paper,” said Gordhan Zadaphia, a leader of Gujarat Parivartan Party founded by the former chief minister Keshubhai Patel. Ahead of the 2012 assembly polls in Gujarat, Modi had held one-day fast in each district of the state as part of his Sadbhavna Mission to create harmony in the state. During his fast in each district, he had announced handsome financial packages for each district for development works. In all, he had announced packages totalling Rs. 39,769 crore for all districts. However, a year later, RTI responses from all the 26 districts revealed that none has received any funds as promised by Modi. On Saturday, Zadaphia shared the RTI details including response from all district collectors and district development officers and also the response of the state finance and general administration department. “Rs 160 crore public money was spent to organise the one-day Sadbhavna fast for the chief minister in each district of the state,” he said, hitting out at Modi for “lying to the public.” Giving details for two districts, he said that for Amreli, Modi had announced a package of Rs. 1,004 crore while for tribal district Dahod, the package was Rs. 1,583 crore. However, district collectors of both district stated that they have not received any such financial package from the state government. Significantly, the state finance department and general administration department allegedly feigned ignorance about any special financial package for any district. Modi had organised a three-day Sadbhavna fast in Ahmedabad after the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) gave a clean chit to him and others in the Gulbarg Society massacre case. Subsequently, he had visited each district with one day fast aimed at creating social harmony in the state. The opposition party leaders and also activists and social workers had dubbed Modi’s Sadbhavna Mission as “political gimmick” ahead of the assembly polls. Keshubhai Patel’s own party, however, had fared poorly in the polls winning only 2 seats.

As posters above have already pointed out, the news is wrong. Let's see if you have the 'liberal' courtsey to come out and post you were wrong? Don't be like TOI who keep doing hitjobs on Modi and then express regret hidden somehwere on the page 14-15 of their paper.

Some hypocritical comments my Modi

The government has only one motto - India first. It has only one holy book - the Constitution of India. It has only one bhakti - Bharat bhakti; one shakti - koti koti jana shakti; one pooja - the welfare of our millions and one karyashaili - sabka sath, sabka vikas.
Who is going to take care of the Dalits, the backward castes, the fishermen? Not the Congress. They only care about votes.
This government is all about vote-bank politics.

Around hundred thousand people in the rally of Modi in Hyderabad. Almost all the news channel showing his full 45 mins speech. I am not sure why do not they understand that this guy has no presence outside Gujarat, right Outty?
