Have we given up on Raina-the test batsman

Raina had the right idea but execution was poor. You have to be positive and can't go into your shell. Unfotunately he played a poor shot and idn't pick the right ball to hit.
Exactly and UG I expect you to come up with the real reason why he couldnot execute the shot and missed it by such a margin. I think its because of his rear end hitting role in ODIs and T20s where he has to come out and start bashing. He never learnt to build an innings and hence play the ball on merit. He could have done it early in his career but was ruined by team management who exploited his big hitting capabilities by sending him down the order as a hitter. His game was never allowed to develop.

& if you notice ' date=' hes got out to spinners more often than pace bowlers ..clearly its more than technical flaws whichhas been the reason for his failure .[/quote'] Yes, its more than tech flaw. Fascinating (and sad) to watch how the human mind battles work. Anxiety, worry, uncertainty can prey on your mind causing lack of confidence.

In odis Raina can go for his shots without any problems from the get go. But in Tests he's faced with a situation where no. of deliveries is not a factor and he can bide his time. So even if he wants to play a shot he's caught in two minds which he is not in odi as he can simply launch. This is what's causing Raina grief in Tests IMO.

this allowing him to play tests w/o improving his technique is gonna hurt him in long term :( he should be in a tours ffs! would love to have guy like him in team ...but our selectors are brainless

Absolutely sabby. Send him on A tours and let him play longer games, maybe even county cricket. If he still does not make it, so be it. It is ridiculous they select him in Test-15 and the brainy MSD selects him in Test-11!! With IPL, where is the time for sending Intl stars on A-tours and county cricket? :banghead:

Raina can't build his innings by drafting his runs in a test match. He doesn't have the technique. He is successful in shorter formats because the pitches for those games are deliberately flat these days and lots of guys now thrive with aggression in such games where the bowlers are now just bowling machines. But defence is not his forte and on pitches where there is something for bowler he has no way of playing out at all. he is a classic FTB who can only score runs if he hits out and gets some by luck.

That wouldnot have been the case if he was sent in earlier at no.3 or no.4 early in his career. He would have learnt the art of building an innings but the idea of Dhoni utilising him for finishing off games destroyed him.

Maybe subconsciously he has given up on Tests and decided there is no future for him in Tests. PS: Virat Kohli's face after Raina's stumping told the full story of Raina's shot selection.

it has nothing to do with it raina has big technical problems and how can u make him bat at 4 when u have kohli, gambhir in same team...yuvraj too?

Can't blame Dhoni or team management for making the optimal use of Raina. Raina has been amazing in odis and probably one of the reasons why we are the World Champions. It's unfortunate there's no off season anymore and intl players can't play domestic cricket to improve their game.

During the Sri Lankan series we had Gambo opening and no Yuvi .. he could have had that no.4 slot but they keep giving it to the fecking Rohit. Plus when he was new there was no Kohli .. even if not 4, he could have played at 5 but Dhoni used to make him come at 6 or sometimes even at 7. That destroyed his abilities alltogether.

Dont blame them .. I am not blaming them. I am just pointing out the reason. Its the same reason why Dhoni's game also couldnot develop. I remember when Dhoni was playing at A level .. He was batting at number 3 and building big innings.. but then he just never came before 5 in ODIs after becoming the captain.

If he had connected and the ball had sailed over the boundary, everyone would have said that was a great shot. These things do happen sometimes in cricket. I think technically he has a few flaws which he needs to sort out, in particular his ability to play the short ball. There is a question mark over his patience but the more he plays the longer version, the better he will get with his shot selection. What's impressive about Raina is how mentally tough he is, which is crucial for international cricket. He has played so many match winning knocks under pressure in ODIs and T20s. I think if he gets those technical things rectified, he could be a good No.6 batsman because he has got everything else covered. He is also a fantastic fielder and can also roll his arm over when required.

where?
from cricinfo- Dhoni pointed out another reason to persist with Raina. "It's important to have a left-hander at six or seven. This series [Daniel] Vettori wasn't playing but if a left-hander is there, the mix becomes ideal. Gambhir is at the top of the tree and then you have a fair number of right-handers. Then it's useful if you have a left-hander at six if the wicket is turning. But that doesn't guarantee anyone a place in the Test side."
