Crookbond Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 India-China war. Emergency and it's aftermath. It was exactly my thought but the years do not seem to correlate. Sino-Indian war was in 1962 while the emergency was in 1975-77. In both cases, it took 2 years for the GDP to nose dive. What created that 1 year buffer that too at such strong levels ? In addition, how was the recovery so quick - again within 1 year? The reason for both cases should be different as the time periods of both events are significantly apart from each other.

I am not sure about the India-China war, but in the aftermath of the Emergency there was a definite sentiment that the Indian economy would collapse and the growth of the Naxalite movement supported by a lot of elite and educated Indians gave credence to it. It was during that time that India shut doors to a lot of FDI and invested in domestic industries - for example Coca Cola was not renewed their contract and in lieu many fledgling companies were given subsidies to launch their business. That would explain the sudden drop due to lack of FDI and again the sudden spurt due to local industries gaining ground. I am not sure if the exact correlation of the years works out because it might take some time for these policies to take effect on the ground level. 1964-65 was also the India-Pakistan war, though I am not sure about the economic effects of that.
EnterTheVoid Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 But their Olympic performance is better than countries 10 times their size. There is definitely no doubt about that one!
EnterTheVoid Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 Japan had an atomic bomb dropped on them but look at how much they have developed in the last 50 years!

Mariyam Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Why title this Capitalism vs Communism? Take a look at this: Even a Communist, and international pariah nation like Cuba, does better on the light-o-meter than say, Capitalist Australia. Large parts of the latter are under developed a la Saharan and rain forest Africa. lol
EnterTheVoid Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 Why title this Capitalism vs Communism? Why not? Its Capitalist South v/s Communist North.
EnterTheVoid Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 On the topic of "pariah" nation Cuba, cop this: Returning to the United States, interviews disclose that 9/11 rescue workers who volunteered after the September 11, 2001 attacks were denied government funds to care for physical and psychological maladies they subsequently developed, including respiratory disease and PTSD-induced bruxism. Unable to receive and afford medical care in the U.S., the 9/11 rescue workers, as well as all of Moore's friends in the film needing medical attention, appear to sail from Miami to Cuba on three speedboats in order to obtain free medical care provided for the enemy combatants detained at the U.S. Guantanamo Bay detainment camp. The group arrives at the entrance channel to "Gitmo" and Moore uses a megaphone to request access, pleading for the 9/11 victims to receive treatment that is on par with the medical attention the "evildoers" are receiving. The attempt ceases when a siren is blown from the base, and the group moves on to Havana, where they purchase inexpensive medicine and receive free medical treatment at the elite Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital.[7] Providing only their names and birth dates, the volunteers are hospitalized and receive medical attention. Before they leave, the 9/11 rescue workers are honored by a local Havana fire station. :hysterical:
EnterTheVoid Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 9/11 rescue workers had to go to Cuba to get medical treatment because they couldn't afford it in the States!
Crookbond Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 ^ There is a nice documentary on it. I think it has played a vital role to speed up heathcare reforms too.
Clarke Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 ^ Sicko ? That Michael Moore guy HATES America :beee: Not sure which one you were referring to but this one was far better: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/sickaroundtheworld/
Silva Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 That Michael moore thing was ridiculous. o6ZH1ps20WA Authoritarian regimes generally spend alot of resources trying to brainwash people and Michael moore and other Left wingers arn't smart enough to realize it. As for healthcare I could also look at the fact that according to the non partisan fraiser institue 46,159 Canadians sought medical treatment outside of Canada in 2011, as wait times increased 104 percent, and the doctor and nurse shortage are increasing at fast rate in canada as well. http://www.fraserinstitute.org/publicationdisplay.aspx?id=17360 So Canadians come to the US for healthcare, but American go to Cuba?
Sachinism Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 This is a light map of North and South Korea, guess which one is which The one of top is North Korea, the bottom one is South Korea. How'd I do?
jusarrived Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 read somewhere , that the avg amount of food S Korans waste in a day is a the same as avg N koreans consume in a weeks time :(
jusarrived Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 That is per capita. Totally not shocking. Smallers countries tend to pick pace earlier than the bigger ones , only that our neighbours priorities changed in the 70s or else it wudnt have been too difficult for them to stay ahead for a few more years .
Mariyam Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 read somewhere ' date=' that the avg amount of food S Korans waste in a day is a the same as avg N koreans consume in a weeks time :([/quote'] The North Koreans are on a long term austerity drive. They diet a lot and do not consume electricity for unnecessary activities like watching tv, trolling on cricket boards, going to restaurants etc. Its they, who've taken Gandhiji's motto: Simple living, high thinking to heart. I don't understand why all this is construed as the failure of Communism.
Mariyam Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 A visiting professor at my college, was once called to arbiter some minor water dispute between North and South Korea. The North Koreans didn't want a person from a Western country, probably thinking such a person would be biased. There weren't many non western people with such a varied experience in dealing with international law/disputes as the professor. So the North Koreans agreed to call him for arbitration. The South Koreans were ok with this guy too. Since the North Koreans do not ( or did not then) have a consulate in Mumbai, this guy had to go to the embassy in Delhi. He said it was a 10x10 room, a typical galla shop. They issued the visa and asked him to get a list of documents attested from various people. He traveled via China and on arrival in North Korea, the customs officers asked for the documents. He had them ready, including the invitation letter by the Government of North Korea. However, one of the documents wasn't attested/missing so they deported him. He tried to argue that he was a state guest, but to no avail. The funny thing was that the list of documents they wanted attested was in Korean. If this is they mete out to a state guest, you can only guess what must be the haal of the aam aadmi.
