No my dear friend. It is not a joke, because he will want Mr Pandey to be the selector. The other reason is that I cannot think of anybody else from current T 20 team who will benefit from this move. Sehwag will Raina will..probably for tests. Manoj Tiwary will to cement his place...we know he battles with Rohit for a spot. Or is it Rohit Sharma himself

Sandeep Patil and his team will be expected to ring in sweeping changes that will take Team India to a different level during their tenure in office. However, given the disappointing performances post the World Cup triumph and the current tepid form of key players, the first big challenge will be in formulating short-term as well as long-term objectives. Presumably, the selectors will tread softly, resisting the temptation to get carried away by the public consensus that youngsters need to be drafted in place of non-performers, regardless of their past achievements. It will not be prudent to create a sense of insecurity among the proven performers but at the same time, the selectors do not have the same luxury of assessing players as comparing one apple to another. For example, if Patil and his colleagues have to ponder over the candidate for the No. 6 slot, they will have to solve the conundrum of whether Yuvraj Singh’s double hundred in the Duleep Trophy needs to be given more weightage than a decent half-century by Suresh Raina in a Test match against New Zealand. Talking of the Duleep Trophy, it is a pity that its significance as well as its utility have been diluted due to the CLT20. Agreed, both tournaments are properties of the BCCI and therefore corresponding obligations have to be fulfilled, but the top players would have benefitted immensely from playing in longer duration games leading up to an important Test series. Not only do the top-order batsmen need to spend some time in the middle to get back form, but the bowlers also need to go through the paces in a duration game to get into the groove and most importantly tone up their cricketing fitness to be efficient enough in a Test match. Ishant Sharma will endorse the fact that bowling one long spell after another has contributed to his regaining confidence, an attribute that makes the difference between success and failure at the highest level. Of course, the players will have the opportunity to play a Ranji Trophy game before the first Test against England but the competitiveness in a Duleep game is relatively far superior. Besides, stellar performances in the absence of leading luminaries may not impress the selectors too much. Ashok Dinda’s seven-wicket haul against South Zone would have been viewed differently had the likes of Murali Vijay, S Badrinath, Dinesh Karthik and others figured in his list of victims. It is not Dinda’s fault that South Zone could not field its best eleven, but one wonders if featherbeds across the country and the non-availability of seasoned performers provide the right platform for the selectors to assess performances and players. As such, the time has come for the selectors to be proactive and coordinate with members of the pitches and fixtures committees of the BCCI to help them perform their jobs better. It is an easy option to let things be as they are, but the selectors are deemed responsible as well as accountable for their decisions. Hence, they need to take the line that it is better that they carry the can on account of their preferences rather than someone else’s. Since it is a full-time job these days, the selectors need to ensure that they get the right stage on which to assess the players, failing which the blame game will never cease to stop. Unlike his predecessor, Patil has been very much in the thick of things due to his earlier job (Director-Operations in the NCA) and it’s only fair to expect him to coordinate better with the rest in the system.

MCcricket Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 I hope to see some vision from the selectors also a lot of damage has been caused by Cheeka and co, three things I wanna see is three separate teams and captains, need to build a serious bowling attack as we cannot be a good team with a bowling attack of a minnow side, need to see younger talented faces in the squad and team.

I would love to be surprised by Sandeep Patil's selection panel but knowing our history over 65 years I have the feeling that status quo will remain (as it remains with everything else) with respect to selecting old hags and tired bodies with scant regard for talent grooming.... but let's see (forever the optmist!!)

It is a shame as it is so obvious but selectors or BCCI and even some ICF'ERS argue about how g8 PK, VK are , lol, just blows me away, those are very very low standar, PK VK good for Zimbabwe or even worse, we neEd to look at Suyal, Anwar, Gony, VRV, FUNNY THING IS NOT THAT WE LACK TALENT BUT LACK THE FORESIGHT AND EVEN HAVE SEEN FAR BETTER BOWLERS IN MUMBAI PLAYING KANGA LEAGUES THEN THE LOOSERS WE ALWAYS SEE IN MUMBAI RANJI SIDES, SAME FOR MOST STATES AND NATIONAL TEAM

While all eyes are on Patil, as he is the chairman of the committee, the wise counsel of Roger Binny and the support of Saba Karim, Rajinder Singh Hans and Vikram Rathour will all be called into focus when the Test team is picked. The first issue that needs addressing is how the selectors will view players who are injured, recovering from injury or just plain not match fit. In the last year, India have faltered twice on this count. In England, Zaheer Khan turned up for the first Test battling ankle and shoulder problems, and after 13.3 overs on the opening day of the Lord’s Test, limped off with a hamstring injury. The second instance happened in the same series when Virender Sehwag made a comeback at The Oval, only to register two first-ball ducks.

Is there a perfect selection? After all, when we as fans at ICF are constantly arguing about the squad, I find it hard how the selectors can please everybody. More important, you will go for a hiding when we win and if we lose, you will come back and post that c rap.

Actually, you dont need to be a selector to select this team because 11 selects itself but that is not the only thing selectors need to do. They need to have vision. 11 is not an issue, issue is rest of the 3 guys who will warm the bench and that is what is the test of selectors. For what have they selected Harbhajan as he has not done anything of note after he was dropped? Same for Ishant. He was struggling before his surgery and is still struggling in domestic. At least bring players who are currently doing well in FC and let struggling guys play domestic for the time being.

Number Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Safe or just cowardly selections. Will never build bench strength or get good replacements of non-performers if this continues. FC->Test team transition is becoming very hard and it will not motivate players to perform in FC cricket. Still I think we should give this committee around 2 series to judge.
