The pitch in the 1st Test against England din't provide much support to the seamers and yet SA managed to pull it of. Agree or not..this is just top class stuff from the Aussies. Poms are losing the Ashes big time in 2013.

Forget the meaningless ODI series they had this year. With Cummins in for Hilfy it will be a formidable pace attack. Punter needs to retire and may be Bailey or Quiney can fill that spot.

Smith realized that the only way to have any hold on this Test match was to pick wickets. What good can come of stopping runs - in the first innings!

When the wicket is flat, bowlers are not bowling well, batsmen are scoring runs easily, you need to stop the flow of runs instead of just allowing the other team get away easily.

If you do what you say, you will never get wickets and delay the inevitable. Also note, Smith was almost 2 bowlers short for parts of the day.

By the by, smith is an ultra defensive captain. You won't find him attacking as much the so called pundits want and that too with the kind of pace bowling at his disposal.

Poms specifically prepared spin friendly pitch for SA in 1st Test so that they can skittle SA for a low score using Graeme Swann, that backfired because the pitch behaved different and the ball didn't turn at all. England will not prepare spin tracks for Aussies, they will make sure that conditions are similar to that of India's 2011 England tour - the Red Duke and lots of swing.

Sherlock - the pitch at the Oval is ALWAYS abrasive. There was no specific tailoring of the pitch.
