Rohit wasn't picked for India A for the tour game and Tiwary was.

That is true....I mean I am not looking too much into the A squad picked for the tour game...if that is an indication of how the slots have opened up then looking at Raina and Vinny in the X1 means that they are still in the scheme of things. But all said...you might have a point here,but I still beleive he should be behind Rohit in the pecking order,given how much we have invested him in the last 4-5 years.

Without the test matches his average must be higher. Anyway it doesn't mean a thing. I am not sure if Tiwary will succeed in tests but he is more likely then proven failures like UV and Raina. I like the fact that he is willing to spend time at the crease and choose his strokes carefully. Initially I was worried he could only play leg side but he is a very calculating player.

What in IPL? In WI he was our best batsman and got a 100 and in SL looked good as well. But given his age I cant see him making much long term impact, will always be a squad player like wes brown.

ODIs and IPL cant be a benchmark for selection for tests. Only the performance in longer format games should matter. Even the selectors keep making this same mistake over and again and that's why they have failed in finding a solid No.6 batsman.

Plenty of Indian cricketers have come into the Test side after performing well in ODIs. Performance in ODIs at least shows whether you are cut out for international cricket and can perform at that level. It still gives you a better idea about the calibre of cricketers than just domestic FC matches where plenty of cricketers have great averages on the basis of flat tracks and ordinary bowlers. A cricketer who has done well in ODIs and has a 50+ FC average should be a good candidate for selection in Test cricket. There'll always be exceptions though, like Pujara.
