More than what he did on the field, he will always remain the benchmark for every youngster on how to handle fame at a young age and how not to let stardom get to you and burn you out, especially for young prodigies.

Growing up watching cricket in the 90s, he was a great player in a mediocre team and the only reason people used to tune in to watch India play with the hope that Sachin will single handedly do it again for the team. He was the major reason why cricket became so popular in India. He was a hope for an entire generation. His ability to consistently score despite the pressure, expectations and playing in a mediocre team was phenomenal. He was one of the most all round batsmen who could play equally well in sub continent conditions as well as in England, South Africa, West Indies and Australia against the best bowling attacks. He has a great defense as well as attacking capability which is the reason he has done so well in both ODIs as well as tests. Perhaps no other batsman will ever reach the heights he has achieved.

I remember the 90s as a kid who used to read the newspaper/follow the news since the teachers/parents said so. Those were turbulent times particularly in the early 90s, we were literally bhikharis when we had to airlift gold in for a loan, the communal violence after Babri & the gruesome Mumbai blasts among other things. Brand India was non-existent. What exactly did we produce that was world class ? Not too much, but we had someone who everyone acknowledged was the best in business :hatsoff:

I think we loved him so much because so many times when he came to the crease he was our only hope, especially in the early days. He embodied the lines: “Hope” is the thing with feathers - That perches in the soul - And sings the tune without the words - And never stops - at all - He was "the thing with feathers", was SRT, he gave us lift.

I did not even know his name then, but I was awe-struck. I was mesmerized. Indian was losing and there was no hope. Kapil was the captain I think and Srikanth was at the other end. Even Srikanth got inspired and came down the track once to his Qadir out for a six in Sachin style, but was hopelessly beaten by the spin (and Srikanth was a known hitter those days). Yes, my obsession with the game started that day.

The reason i started watching cricket was due to SRT those sixes anf fours the lone battles for India he brought more recognition for Indians it has been tough and it will be tough without him cricket lost its soul and aura.
