OP is outdated - 2013 post
Din't read the OP. Saw that on the news today. Hopefully this is for the better. The service is cheap and low grade even on the 1st class.

they are serial u-turnists :haha:
Ever party does the same. Opposition will always protest the government. This increase was actually proposed in interim budget by UPA but wasn't applied because of code of conduct.

passenger fare raise is fine i guess. but freight fare raise will cause inflation as the cost of transportation of everything from cement to groceries will increase.

In other words, you have just told us that the NDA are no different from the UPA.

In other words' date=' you have just told us that the NDA are no different from the UPA.[/quote']If NDA were the same as UPA, then the current govt would not have increased passenger fares and backed out fearing criticism (recall the fate of Dinesh Trivedi in the UPA cabinet). The fact that the fare hike actually materialized under NDA rather than UPA makes them different, with the former being better.

The fare hike was proposed in early February much before the Model Code came into effect in March, and the hike could have easily been implemented by UPA in February itself. It was postponed to avoid an electoral backlash, not for any apolitical reason.

BJP is justifying the fare hike by saying was proposed by the UPA -ab kahan gaya 56 inch ka seena?? If its a much needed move (which it certainly is) then why not come out and say so instead of saying that UPA proposed it.

NDA also would not increase fare just before elections. That would be a disastrous move politically.

The difference being that the increased fare will actually be going for the betterment
+1
Except when BJP/Modi were opposing UPA hike, they didn't say that it is ok if increased fare is for betterment. So this point has nothing to do with the debate. Having said that, I am all for it, the less populist the government, the better

IIRC BJP at the Center was not opposed to the fare hike. Modi though opposed it.

The fare hike was much needed. But suburban train fares in Mumbai has gone up by 100% :fear: This is way beyond limit for an "all of a sudden" hike. They should have restricted it to 20% or may be 30%, anything beyond that will raise some serious concerns with traveling cost in trains being a daily fixed expenditure here in Mumbai. There were agitations from NCP workers in various corners of Mumbai today in Lower Parel, Mulund, Thane.

On the contraray this is just before elections , they could have easily waited for few months & get done with state elcections lettting Railways bleed a few more 1000 crores

The local train tickets in Mumbai are extermely cheap . I remember the FC pass for the whole month was ~300-400Rs and regular pass was 90-120 Rs . Agreed they should have been increased gradually

What source is there for this ? Politically BJP has to reply back to congress. But I have seen them give clear reasons for the hike.

Yes it's too low. This is welcome change.

So you judge governments by their talk and not action. A unique perspective I must say.
