Analyst Maaz Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 14 teams 4 associates There will therefore surely have to be 2 groups of 7 to start with with at least the best 3 from each group qualifying for the next stage. That stage could be: 1) same as 2011 (quarter finals) 2) super sixes like 1999 and 2003 (points carried) 3) super eights like 2007 (will be way too long) Not tried before BUT perhaps 4) 2 even groups of 3 then semis 5) 2 even groups of 4 then semis 6) super sixes (no points carried) 7) super eights (points carried) 8) OTHER I personally feel there should be super sixes (with points carried over) The 2011 format was a 3 match knock out tournament more or less There was not enough to play for in the first month or so It was similar to 1996 It did get quite a bit of criticism ICC should change the format Since 1992 when at least 9 teams or more have been playing I feel 1999 and 2003 WCs have had the best structure
NareshK Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Scrap the quarterfinals and have top two teams from 2 squads reach the SFs. If we have a quarter final format, 8 teams will easily qualify because there is not enough quality. Then if an average team has a good day, they can reach SFs. Instead, they should make sure that the most consistent teams in the tournament have a shot at winning World Cup. So 4 teams with most wins in league stage should go into Semi Finals.
jairamesh Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I like the World T20 format, but without the preassigned super 8 groups and with 16 teams. 1st Round, Four groups of Four, top two go through to Super 8 2nd Round, Two groups of four, each group, top two go through semis Semi, and then Finals, so winner will play a total of 7 games. This way every single game counts, one defeat and the next game becomes pressure game. But alas, ICC needs to make sure India plays at least 6 to 7 games to maximize revenues, and the threat of 1st round exit must be minimised so unlikely to happen. So I guess best to stick with 2011 format, it worked well, it worked well in 1996 too, not sure why they changed it.
Cricketics Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Good to have a Super Six or Super 8 after group stage. Top 4 teams go to semis. Direct Q/f from group stage puts some of the best teams paly against each other way too early. Like say India vs Australia q/f. Surely Australia was better than New Zealand and South africa and might have made all the way to Semis to paly against Sri Lanka. With super 8 kind of format, best overall performance team make their way to semis. Which is Fair.
1983-2011 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 12 teams split in 2 groups of 6 top 3 team from both groups qualify for super six taking their points tally with them no semi finals but best of 3 finals
Pagalpanti Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Best format was probably in 92, all teams played each other. top teams went through the Qf/Sf stage and then the final.
G_B_ Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Best format was probably in 92' date=' all teams played each other. top teams went through the Qf/Sf stage and then the final.[/quote'] not possible with 14 teams. I prefer the 2011 world cup format with a difference. 7 teams in group. top two teams into semis and then finals. In total the winning team and finalist play 8 games.
Asim Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 2007 format was superb but Pak/Ind getting eliminated and Ireland/BD qualifying ruined it big-time. 24 matches in 2nd stage which all of them were supposed to be super exciting games among top 8 teams; apparently 11 of them finished having at least one team from either Ireland or BD in each :((

jashan83 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I would prefer a WC with 15 teams 3 Groups of 5 Teams- 30 Matches 2 teams from each group qualify Super 6- 12 Matches Finals 43 Matches, and all the matches will be critical. Ensures that all revenue earning teams play 4 matches at least a teams which makes to final plays 9 matches
I6MTW Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 16 teams. 2 groups of 8. Top 4 teams of each group goes to QF'S. Then SF'S and then Finals.
Jersey #10 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 ICC - International Cricket conference UCC - Universal Cricket conference 7 teams each. play like NFL
Asim Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 ^ too long and boring it will get for 12 teams, for 9 teams there were just 39 matches in all, for 12 it will be 69

Seriously, this format will make the tournament more competitive and there will be no easy matches.
The Outsider Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 The only format in which India can hope to qualify for the knockouts would be one with 8 teams playing QFs. Super 6 is good as a format - something like '99 and '03 WCs. Ideally would like to see the number of teams being reduced and have a '92 format.
SLICKR392 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 I just hope we don't need to rely on someone else to qualify. :asleep:
