Is Sachin a greater test batsmen or ODI batsmen?

Well the argument is that setting up a chase and total should be the protocol for an opening batsman in ODIs and Tendulkar has done it very successfully. Sure he was helped by Sehwag's blistering knocks at 100+ SR like Gilchrist did for Australia. But even never in his prime was Gilchrist considered the most dangerous Australian batsman - Ponting was though he played a position lower than Tendulkar.

I rate Gilchrist pretty high as he shows up for big games. In 99 World Cup he scored a 50 while chasing a low total, in 2003 gave a pretty good start along with Hayden to effectively bat India out of the game and in 2007 finished the game with his knock. He played in 3 WC finals and showed up in every one of them. Somehow Gilchrist always scared me as an Indian fan more than than the other Aussie batsmen. Plus I'm not denying Tendulkar's perormances. I am on record saying I would take Tendulkar if I need a odi batsman for say a 7 match series. But he won't be my top pick for a one-off winner takes it all match as he does have a knack of pressure getting the better of him. If you follow American football I would equate Tendulkar with Peyton Manning - one of the greatest players to play the game, racks up big numbers but when the moment arrives he's not the same player.

Actually you do not need to get overwhelmed because of Tendulkar's volume of runs' date=' to say what you got to say. Actually when chips are down all the players you listed are better bets than Tendulkar, backed with facts. I have seen Gilly many a time just change the course of the game with in the few overs of the start of an innings that would invariably put the opponent out of the game (in a line up that had Ponting, Hayden, Bevan, Symo etc no less), a parallel only matched by Viv in the annals of the one day game. Dhoni is as good an opener as Sachin. Dhoni became a batsman just for the pressure in it. He thrives and lives under pressure.

I am talking in terms of comparing him with likes of Dhoni, Bevan, Richards, Gilchrist etc. not with most other batsmen. Of course he's better than most but not as clutch as the best clutch batsmen. My contention is that Tendulkar is probably the best odi batsman and I would have him as the top pick if I was selecting a team for say a 7 match odi series. But there are others who are better clutch players and in case I want to pick a team for a one-off game I would prefer likes of Dhoni, Bevan, Richards and Gilchrist ahead of Tendulkar. Howz that a slight on Tendulkar :dontknow: He's a great but simply not clutch enough a the top clutch players.

Actually any team that played the great Aussie teams of the late 90's and 00's, the player they feared the most is Gilly (because with other players you had a chance even if they played a big knock, with Gilly if he lasted 25 overs you can bid the game good bye), and more over what is scary about him is he played the same way if it was a meaningless one day game or a WC final and came out on top on many occasions.

Realm of coulda woulda shouldas. Everyone thought Dhoni would be found out in places like Eng & Aus in odis but he has showed up there as well. Dhoni has averaged 50+ at a SR of near 90 over 200 games. Somehow I think he would have found a way to negotiate Wasim in odis.

Ok, let me put it differently. If you are selecting a team to play in a WC final, whom would you pick? For a tourney or series I will have Tendulkar in there but for a one-off match (say a hypothetical WC final) my ATG XI will have Dhoni along with Bevan & Richards but I wouldn't have Tendulkar.

That's why he's rated highly in odis coz he can adapt to any situation and bat accordingly. Haven't seen too many batsmen able to do that.
