Has Vijay-Dhawan combo solved India's opening problems ?

Vijay, Dhawan, Rahane, Rohit, Rayudu, Tiwary- thatd be an ideal A side batting lineup.. but some of those will be playing ODIs I guess

If they stick to their word, at least two of those should be happening, the India A tour to SA and hopefully WI A tour to India. Unless Sehwag and Gambhir something extraordinary between now and our next test series, difficult to see anyone else other than Vijay and Dhawan starting out as openers in SA.

All they would need is a few good innings (even if they are in ODIs) and I'm certain that the selectors would pick them, especially because its a tour to SA.

the threat for dhawan and vijay wud be younger competition. in the sachin -dravid days, there was chopra, mongia,jaffer,sriram,mazumadar.none of them were going to be long term international materials. the big 5 had no decent competition. the one that was (yuvraj) didn't live up to his test promise. The current generation of batting prospects all have genuine class(and weaknesses), decent chances of success in internationals and its cutthroat competition. unmukt ,mandeep,baba aparajith and co are pretty formidable talents in the future. 27 yr olds like rayudu are up there as well. its going to be very difficult to settle yourself unless you are very highly talented and support it with other intangibles as well to maintan a very high standard of performnace. for me its not just about 2 players. Its about investment in vacated slots.Investment in reasonably younger( but somewhat seasoned by ranji and a tours )players like dhawan and vijay was the right way to go.whether some indivduals succeed or not, the investment has to be made. Exposure at highest level is improtant at sometime for all prospects.Before that, some seasoning in ranji and a tours is advisable. it wud not have been right to invest in dhawan earlier as he was clueless for years . it wud not be right to bring in unmukt now but after seasoning by domestic and a tours,he may be ready in a few years time. these are the kind of subjective judgements that has to made at a particular time. A disaster was barely avoided as the selectors were myopic enough to bring back jaffer and take indian cricket backwards but bcci policy prevented perhaps the worst decision in a long time. one only hopes the judicious investments are made by selectors and disastrous decisions (like bringing in RANJI bullies ) be avoided. there will be some successes and some kambli-matthew elliot like cases

Sehwag made his last comeback on Kumble's persistence, Zaheer had to pick truckloads of County wickets. Plus given their frosty equation with Dhoni, wonder how much support they will have from him.

A few young untried batsmen are Unmukt, Baba, Manprit Juneja, Ankit Bawne, Aarpit Vasavada, Robin Bist, Mandeep, Taruvar Kohli, Akshat Reddy, Prashant Chopra.

For the moment these two are doing more than fine. Yes they may struggle in south Africa but they also may be able to adapt their technique. Give these two a decent run and see how they go. Rather than over analysing the pitches, just pick them on their form. Right now these two are capitalizing on their opportunity and that's a sign of mental strength. A trait that will be important in south Africa. We just have to admit we don't know how they will do in South Africa and just pick them on their current form.

Exactly. But we don't know. The dumbest thing to do right now would be to drop a player in form so right now it looks like dhawan and vijay are our opening combo ATM and they are doing well.

Absolutley. Give them a long run a year. Lets see how they do. Vijay actually looks better bet. Techincally very good and can play long innings all around wicket. Hopefully IPl wont ruin him Dhawan was unbeliveable today. Amazing. But was super flat track as shown by smith and starc getting runs. But still awesome. Technically has issue with straight ball as cant whip it. I am sure teams already noted this and will bowl straight to him. But jesus on the off wtf. maybe like dada his leg side play will improve. Time will tell on these two but what they have done today was breath taking
