Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, CSK, Rhiti: What’s the connection?

Suresh Raina is back in the Test squad… but that’s not the only return he has made in recent times. Raina has also rejoined Rhiti Sports Management Company — the celebrity management firm who also have MS Dhoni on their roster. A report in the Mumbai Mirror says that after a brief move to another firm called ‘Game 3 Sports’, the all-rounder is now back to being in Dhoni’s team — on the field and off it. Raina was initially part of Rhiti’s roster, but shifted to Game 3 Sports — which is run by a childhood friend. Raina has confirmed the development and so has Rhiti’s head Arun Pandey. He was quoted in the report as saying: “Suresh is back with us. He had gone away for a brief period for a specific campaign and we’re happy to have him back.†The 26-year-old endorses brands like Adidas and Pepsi. While Raina’s return to the Test squad was unlikely, it seems the Rhiti deal was lucky for him. The BCCI included the left-hander in the squad for the fourth and final Test in the ongoing series against Australia. Ravindra Jadeja is also on the list of sports stars that Rhiti manages — and has already made his first forays into Test cricket. Both Raina and Jadeja are also part of Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings and are usually the first names on the team-sheet when it comes to ODIs and Twenty20 internationals. One might argue whether players being picked for Indian cricket and them being on Rhiti’s roster can be passed off as coincidence or just good judgement — but the question does hover about conflict of interest and protecting future business interests, when coincidences pile up too often.

But the headline would not be out of place for this report either. By ‘Dhoni’s team’ we don’t mean Team India. We’re talking about a Dhoni-backed firm called Rhiti Sports Management Company. The latest is that Suresh Raina, left-handed allrounder and a World Cup winner, has gone back to that celebrity management company. After initially being signed by Rhiti Sports, Raina had moved away to another celebrity management firm called Game 3 Sports, which apparently is run by a childhood friend. He has now come back to Rhiti. The development was confirmed by Arun Pandey, the head honcho of Rhiti Sports. “Suresh is back with us. He had gone away for a brief period for a specific campaign and we’re happy to have him back,†Pandey told Mumbai Mirror. He, however, would not go into the details of the deal. Even Raina agreed that he has gone back to Rhiti. “Yes, I’m with Rhiti Sports now,†he informed this paper through a message on Wednesday. The 26-yearold Raina endorses a few brands among which Adidas and Pepsi are the most prominent ones. What exactly has made Raina to come back to Rhiti is not known but the move did not do him any harm. After all, he got picked for the Test team at a time when his future in the five-day format was thought to be over. Raina has so far played 17 Test matches besides, of course, 159 One-Day Internationals and 36 Twenty20 Internationals. Raina is not the only India player in the Rhiti stable. Ravindra Jadeja, too is managed by the company. The left-arm spinner came on board recently. Both Raina and Jadeja, incidentally, are part of all of Dhoni’s teams -- Tests, ODIs, Twenty20 Internationals and also IPL side Chennai Super Kings (CSK). There is strong speculation that another India and CSK player is going to join Rhiti Sports but the information could not be independently verified. The other star on the Rhiti roster is badminton star Saina Nehwal. “We have the best of sports in the country,†Pandey boasted. Dhoni, of course, is the flagship celebrity of the company, having over 25 brands to his name. If Pandey is to be believed, more brands are on the way and many existing brands are ready to renew their association.

If we go back to 90s, a player named Vinod Kambli could only managed to play 17 tests despite averaging 54. Failed players today are damn lucky.

You will be respected and chances will come along your way.

He nowhere near looks a test batsman, average less 30 after so many tests. If selectors cannot see he is not made of tests and cannot be our future in test cricket, what they are selected for then, just bring back tried and tested failure?
