Laaloo Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 West Indies - Dravid ( Tendulkar skipped missed a series which we won and then skipped a series which we won recently) South Africa - Tendulkar by a longshot. Dravid struggled mightily in South Africa especially against good bowling attacks. England - Dravid and Tendulkar for me were equal until last tour but dravid's awesome series puts him ahead by a good margin Australia - Tendulkar NZ - Tendulkar. Dravid struggled a lot in that 2002-03 series

Marut Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Dravid for me. Nearly every big win in the last decade away from home was synonymous with a Dravid special. 148 at Leeds, 233 and 72* at Adelaide, the twin 50s at Kingston to win us an away series in WI, 112 vs WI at Kingston in 2011, 93 at Perth. Not to forget the Twin 100s vs NZ in 1999, 217 at Oval (next highest was 54) in '02 and the 3 100s in England in 2011. The number of times he's put his hand up for opening the batting or to bat after 2-3 overs and saved the team only adds to that aura. Agree. But Tendulkar is better overall than Dravid, his records in Aus and SA prove that. During his peak period (90s) Tendulkar was unlucky to be part of a team that was plain rubbish away and won just one overseas test in SL for the whole decade. Tendulkar should have had these kind of Dravid innings but he got no cooperation from the team. Dravid was luckier in that respect, that his classy overseas innings were well supported by bowlers and other batsmen.
adi B Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Which is what you did. :winky: Back to thread, for me it is Dravid cause he always put a prize on his wicket, at home or abroad. Tendulkar played with flair, Dravid played with purpose. I would rate Sunny above SRT as well. THIS

Laaloo Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 And yet scored more than Sachin? For some reason I had a memory of Sachin doing good on that tour. Our main problem on overseas tours was that none of these batsmen scored big in the same innings. It was always a one off performance :banghead: Here are the stats from that series: http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2002-03/IND_IN_NZ/STATS/IND_IN_NZ_DEC2002-JAN2003_TEST_AVS.html Freaking laxman with a avearge of 6.75
cricketpitch Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 In the last 20 years there hasn't been a better player overseas than Sachin. Sachin is probably the only batsman in the last 20 years or so who averages at least 40 in every country he has played in. Sachin has faced tougher bowling and pitches in the 90's than any other Indian player from the current generation. It was the poor nature of the Indian team which was the reason India could not make the most of some of Sachin's brilliant 100's in the 90's. Rahul Dravid was part of a better team in the last decade and yes he has many more match winning knocks but again the bowling attacks and pitches are nowhere near what the batsman of the 90's faced. There were only 3 batsmen who averaged in 50's in the 90's. Sachin, Lara and Waugh that tells something about the pitches and bowling attacks during that era.

From '96 onwards we had Dravid and Ganguly and both were very good away from home in 90s before Dada went donhill after becoming captain. Prior to that we played just 2 away series Aus in '91 and SA in '92. Tendulkar wasn't definitely at his peak during those tours. The one series where Sachin had no support was the Aus tour in '99. Barring that, someone always did decently like Dada and Dravid in Eng in '96, Azhar and Dravid in SA in '96 and NZ in '98, Dravid and Sidhu vs WI in 97 etc.

When you say after 96, Sachin had Dravid's support, how many series we are talking about? This is overall list of series that India played since Sachin debut to 2000. NZ (90) - Sachin - Average Rahul - NO Saurav - No Eng (90) - Sachin - Success Rahul - NO Saurav - No Aus (91) - Sachin - Success Rahul - NO Saurav - No SA (92) - Sachin - Success Rahul - NO Saurav - No Eng (96) - Sachin Success, Rahul - Average, Saurav - Success SA (96) - Sachin success Rahul - Success Saurav - average WI (97) - Sachin - Success, Rahul - Success - Saurav - Poor NZ (98) Sachin - Sucess, Rahul - Success Saurav Success Aus 99 Sachin - Success, Rahul - Poor Saurav - Poor Your assertion that saurav started providing support in overseas test matches doesn't stand scrutiny of numbers. Rahul did but not much and Sachin played lot of cricket outside SC before Rahul and Saurav arrived. There hadn't been a single tour outside SC, other than NZ 02-03, until recent Eng tour where Sachin failed. Probably you can count 2006 SA series, but there Dravid failed even more miserably.
rkt.india Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Dravid has a moderate record 2006 onwards away from home at most places outside SC. He had good tour to SA in 1996 but after that he struggled there mostly.

putrevus Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Laxman was very poor in England thru out, Dravid was poor in SA and Australia, he had one good series in Australia that too when they had the most flat pitches and worst bowling attack. Mohinder had one great series so you cannot really put him up there. But boy he was awesome in 1983. It has to be between Sachin and Sunny. Sunny wins because he faced better bowlers thru out his career.
rkt.india Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Yes. He scored 125 runs in total 6 innings at an average of 20.83. He was highest run getter for India in 1996 test series in SA. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=380;type=series

His first tour in WI was his best and at that time, WI didnt yet have many of those better bowlers.

Barring that, someone always did decently like Dada and Dravid in Eng in '96, Azhar and Dravid in SA in '96 and NZ in '98, Dravid and Sidhu vs WI in 97 etc. I am particularly talking about the bowling support Tendulkar had. Here is India's win record away for the nineties. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;orderby=won;spanmax1=31+Dec+1999;spanmin1=01+Jan+1990;spanval1=span;template=results;type=team Note how pathetic India was in the 90s, even below Sri lanka , New Zealand and Zimbabew for away matches, winning just one match for the whole decade. Even Zimb had W/L of 0.09 , higher than India. Sachin was the lone jewel that shone between 1990-96. He had support between 97-99 but our bowlers failed to step up and we did not win a single overseas match apart from the one win against SL in 93.
Number Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Sachin. Dravid avg in SA and Aus (heavily inflated due to 03-04 tour but still avg) are poor. Also his poor record in Sri Lanka is another dent.
Marut Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 It has to be between Sachin and Sunny. Sunny wins because he faced better bowlers thru out his career. This is a myth.
rkt.india Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Dravid may have more innings in overseas win but when it comes to consistency overseas, it is SRT.

Nobody raised his game more than Inzamam did in the sight of victory.
