Why has SA never produced any good spinners?

When talking of SA greats, one remembers Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock, Allan Donald, Jacques Kallis, etc. There is never a spinner on this list. England have Underwood, Swann, Laker and of course with Australia, there is Shane Warne, Richie Benaud. Why have Saffas not excelled in this field?

their current spinner(peterson) and previous spinner(tahir) and even before that (harris) have all been sh***. :giggle: i dont know if its just the pitches. maybe its a mindset :dontknow:

he can become indian great if keeps on improving (which he has ) but thing is man they dont need so many spinners they play most of cricket on different tracks from ours and batsmen of south africa play spin well and fast bowlers are good enough to win matches anywhere they have pretty good record in india actually..better then aussies:cantstop:

well this is going off topic i honestly dont know why they dont have spinners maybe its a cultural thing for them too ?

The primarily role of spinners in South Africa is holding up one end even in the domestic level. Unlike Australia or England South Afriac doesn't have any pitch which is known for spin. It's quite understandable in that light that they haven't produced a "great".

Pitches? They have decent pitches for spinners. AFAIK better than NZ who have produced Vettori and SA are yet to produce a decent spinner in Tests.

Warne is an exception, and even Swann is something of a rarity in England. At the end of the day, the only region to have regularly produced attacking, wicket-taking spinners is the subcontinent.
