Time to drop Tendulkar ?

I can understand Predator's point though. We expect our (all time) great to somehow will us to victory. A smashing century to propel us to a lead of 300 would have been nice. Oh well, we all can dream, can't we? I say to people, accept that he is not an all time great. He is a player who had a great decade and has been on the decline for a while now. But he has proven with this series performance that he definitely belongs to the test team.
sorry yoda but WTF:haha:

There used to be a time in 2007 when some terrible things were written about Sachin by the very same people who are now queuing up line to sing hymns in praise of him. But I don’t think its fair on those people to bump those old threads now and make them look bad. Back then, they felt Sachin was harming the team’s chances of win. Of course, that opinion was flatly wrong misguided but they all spoke in what they thought was the best interests of the team. Calling for head of a great player does not make anti ‘that player’ or ‘anti-India’. It just makes them people who committed an error in judgment.

Top post sir. Agree with every single word you said.

MM all fair points there however some of those posts are not errors in judgement just pure vitriol. When someone says name one performance SRT has which can be considered great, thats not objective assessment anymore. I am sorry but on this one I will need to disagree with you. The bumping of these threads is warranted to a certain extent.

The bumping of these threads is warranted to a certain extent.[/quote'] Let me clarify what I said. If posters make what they think are genuine cricketing points as to why Sachin should have been dropped then, I think we should all cut them some slack. After all, I know for a fact that the same guys who called for his head back then are also some of the most passionate cricket fans I know. But yes, I agree with you, in b/w all the mountains of honest criticism back then, some rotten apple would come in and say some terrible things about Sachin. That is simply unacceptable. But we should refrain from painting all the Sachin critics with one big stroke using one broad brush. It is not fair on them to get grouped with a handful of opportunistic bashers. And btw, for those who made all those pathetic comments about Sachin back then (you know who you’re, I don’t need to name names), I am 100% confident that none of these guys have played a second team sport of even a pseduo-competitive nature in their life. They obviously have no clue about sports works. This ignorance translates into anger, which then manifests itself in the form of vitriol

Sorry MM, I am still not convinced about this point of view. If you (not as in "you" specifically) are an honest fan and someone who has actually followed SRT's career right from the beginning, you would know that the man has the heart to turn things around. His injury and consequent struggles should not be an event for dropping him. He has given us many great sporting moments, I think its quite normal for us to support him through his moment of crisis, very few people really did that. I think SRT's heart in every game has always been a clear demonstration that he would make it through his crisis, I am just shocked that so few found it believable. On the subject of dravid, when SRT went through his crisis he was between 31-34, Dravid on the other hand is 38. The decline for Dravid is terminal just as it is the case for Punter, I am afraid that there is no other way around it. Quite clearly, the level of criticism dravid has faced pales in comparion to SRT.

I think its fair to say most India supporters who lessen his achievements generally are relatively young. Spoilt on Indias post 2000 successes and dont appreciate SRTs greatness, and how he carried the team in the 90's.

Once again, I am not defending the bashers. To me, they’re beyond recourse and best ignored. But I do know for a fact that there have been guys here, who are otherwise extremely brilliant and have excellent cricketing acumen, who also felt that Sachin should have been dropped. I didn’t agree with them back then, they were just plain wrong. But I am not going to poke fun at their judgment either, coz I genuinely think they just made an honest error in judgment. And reg. the Dravid part – Yes, the same character that were bombarding Sachin with cruise missiles were aiming bows and arrows at Dravid, but that’s because Sachin is a victim of his own disproportionately high standards. He came in as the boy genius, vowed the world with his batting and was the no.1 ranked batsmen in the world before he turned 24. So, when he started to falter for the first time, I suppose lost sense of what constitutes fair criticism and what doesn’t and started saying all sorts preposterous things.

I have no energy to keep defending old posts. Clearly some of you guys have a lot of time on your hand to keep finding and bumping up old threads. :hehe: Believe me, if I have the time, I can find threads showing how wrong most posters have been. BTW, Predator who started this thread, was one of the top posters before he disappeared.

Sorry yoda was not meant to go after you. But just read that post and had to highlight it:giggle: Where is Preds? His no nonsense appraoch is missed. Just learn the lesson, never doubt god again and always remain a believer:--D

I think this is getting over the top. Do we have to open all the old threads that were relevant at the time of creation. Imagine Jadeja starts scoring 100 after 100 lol All these threads will resurface.

Yup. Lot of absurd things were said. We do not worship a person but his abilities that we admire. We were confident that he will come back with a bang. He did. The injury was the main reason more than anything else. I dont know why people hate SRT supporters. If they really appreciate good cricket then they should have kept from going that far to criticize him. Nonetheless, we got our leason. We all are happy that he doing best now. I hope we dont get more idiots doing the same thing for Dravid now. Let the guy decide. He will bang 2 centuries back to back and you guys will start jumping that he is back to his best and next day he will declare his retirement. So enjoy the success while our Heros decide to hang their shoes. Trust me, we aint getting any SRT, RD or even VVS any time soon.

It does make itself quite obvious when we see drivel like 'I'm a perfectionist', 'I have high expectations' or 'us fans shouldnt be complacent', etc, etc. Its as though its our duty to 'praise them' when they do well (this never goes beyond, well played xyz  ) and our duty to slag them off when they fail. Anyone who has played sport at any sort of competitive level knows that sports is played, and watched for enjoyment unless you're only in it for the money. And if the prospect of India losing is so hard to bear, why the fawk do you guys bother to watch the game in the first place?

It isnt so much that these folks really care about the Indian team winning and losing, it is just that their success metric has just one variable in it - Win/loss percentage. In their own mind, they have completely bastardized the concept of professional sports. They would have rather see a pointless an Innings and 200 run Indian win against Zim than a 2 wicket, day 5, session three loss against Australia. For them, the former is 'success', while the latter is 'failure'. It just clearly shows they have little or no understanding of sports whatsoever, which obviously stems from the fact they have played negligible sports in their own lives. Sadly, more and more these days, a 'Loyal fan' is supposedly the one who can make the loudest cheers and take partisanship to ridiculous levels. This is the reason why more and more, we're seeing hyper-jingoism manifest itself in the form of these crude 'We will BATTEEEEEEERR them' shrills.
