Seems to be a case of shoot the messenger because you don't like the message. In any case, some introspection is long due. There is a huge difference between admitting one's shortcoming and working towards removing that and washing one's dirty linen in public. How is shouting about this in Cannes going to help the situation back home? If she was serious about improving women's conditions she can involve in such works back in India

That's 90s or early 00s thinking.. I wouldnt think it that way. And we Indians like to take actions when there is outside pressure. Remember Delhi Rape case, we got lot of international shame because of that and lot of people did what they supposed to do because of that. I used to think like you too.. but i am at the stage.. or the safetey of women in our country is at the stage where it is better if we get more and more bad rap on the issue. Malika didnt say everything right and didnt say it in right way.. but the bigger issue is that we got problems... and it will get worst if nothing gets done.

Her basis is wrong but she is telling the truth. So, if one person says 8 * 3 = 32 and other 8 * 4 = 32. Well the answer is right, so it is truth, right. She is not right about one single thing. Her understanding of progressiveness also seems rather warped and wannabe western. Let us first understand that progressive by implication does not mean western. I will not even go into factual inaccuracies.

In the context of the gang rapes, than yes, the lack of adequate support given to the victims is regressive and depressing. I would be surprised if anyone argued otherwise. Now, she is well within her rights to speak her mind about the general safety of women in India. Whether she decides to do anything meaningful about it is another issue entirely. No sane person would equate kissing and waltzing around half naked with progressiveness. No denying the west is more sexually tolerant but if you use that as your sole measure of progressiveness, you have a few ****ing screws loose in your head.

Agree that she didn't explicitly state gang rapes but come on, does she need to? I don't know what her criteria for judging progressiveness of a society is. Any sane person would judge progressiveness on the basis education, access to healthcare etc and not trivial nonsense like kissing on screen/wearing bikinis

Mallika clearly states why India is regressive and why she is progressive and her definition of those terms. Now merely because the final conclusions might be same doesn't equate her opinion to your or mine.
