An English pacer, bowling in swing friendly conditions needs to average under 27 for me to consider him a worldclass bowler. So if Anderson averages 27.01 he is mediocre but if he averages 26.99 he's world class eh? Literally doesn't make sense. Averages mean little in the present, only to show a career as a whole. Because anderson was awful in his earlier years it's affected his career average. Not really, when I said under 27, I meant within tolerances....I would consider him to be worldclass if he averaged 26.78 or if he averaged 27.22. But as it stands now, he averages 30, while averaging 27+ in English pace-friendly conditions. That is not worldclass, that is mediocre. Literally doesn't make sense. He was aweful early on, mediocre since then and has had a few series of execellent form over the past 3 years. Almost every bowler, if fit, goes through a 4-6 year period of peaking in their late 20s/early 30s and Anderson is there at the moment. During those peak periods, even average bowlers bowl like worldclass bowlers but whether one is worldclass or not, has to include their highs and lows. As it stands right now, Anderson's figures and Zaheer Khan's figures are nearly identical. Unacceptable for a worldclass bowler operating in pace friendly conditions to average just as much as a worldclass bowler operating on spin friendly conditions. In 1-2 years from now, Anderson would be back to averaging 30+ and his peak would be similar to that of Andy Caddick or Darren Gough, who were good but not worldclass bowlers.

Anderson is a poor man's Angus Frazer. Slightly better than Frazer on dead pitches, significantly worse than him on helpful ones. When the ball was bouncing and swinging, Angus Fraser was just as threatening as Akram. What I meant with the Gough-Caddick comparison, is that like them, Anderson too will have 3-5 peak years and then go back to mediocrity.

Even in his prime he struggled against SA at home and NZ away from home. Whole bowling unit click so each one benefit from other.
