Umesh is not really made for ODIs. He should excel in tests with time.
We have bowler who bowls 90 mph and is developing. What do we do? say drop him, not suited to odis. I mean WTF, no wonder we never get fast bowlers. The guy needs to play and get games to learn and get better, already doing ok and improving. Next world cup is in AUS, I think fast bowler may be handy:hysterical: All this rubbish on not suited to odis blah blah. Still some never learn. He is young with talent. Ever heard of giving him time to learn and develop while playing, he will improve! Just like loads of others in current team have. Will only improve by playing to give him experience and so allowing to hone skills. Also not too much work load, if feel playing to much can rest odd odi game and a series. But still must play odis.

How many in favor of letting Umesh Yadav be Test specialist for at least 1 more year while he develops and hones his skills? Not everyone is good for all formats right away Giving him the time (or forcing him to spend time) exclusively on one format for 1 or 2 years will help him develop consistency in one format first. After that, depending on how skillful he is - try him for ODIs/T20s etc.
He can hone skills in odis by playing and learning. We need him for aus world cup. Your thinking is from the dark ages Some idiots said same about cook. But actually it helped him get better in tests, plus gave him more confidence and belief. Dravid also improved as test player from odis. So did anderson and zak. The list goes on and on..

He is not accurate to start with. Will bowl 4 good balls and then 1 on the pads and one short and wide. Gets wickets with new ball but even there he is not regular. Ishant outbowled him in the CT if that tells you something.

We need him more in tests than ODIs. I would want him focusing more on tests and he can easily skip these ODI series against Sri Lanka every now and then.

Er the point of playing odis is so he improves and irons out flaws. He bowls fast and is massive asset. Wicket of cook and performance against aussies shows that. he will still be focused on tests but can play other formats as well. People act is if you play other formats you lose test focus. Last 30 years of players playing odis and tests with ease has not harmed their test playing, in fact it has improved it. I can list all the players who did well in both if you want:giggle: No idea why umesh is being singled out not to play. Managing work load is one thing yes. But not playing odis is not the way. If he misses this upcoming series no idea what he will do. Go back to india and be lazy. Here with indian team, remains focused, trains and eats well etc etc will help him playing odis

Should play only selective series. This tri series in West Indies will help him, but his workload needs to be managed. We already have the case of Aaron who remains injured/unfit 10 months a year.

Take yadav away and in come trundle city with v kumar and crapthan. Drop Umesh, I mean WTF. Gayle would love the trundlers, line them up and bang!!! At least yadav will give him hurry up

S Africas policy of not letting Steyn play too many ODIs also from dark ages? of course not, it has meant that now close to 30 he is still fit and still quick. Id agree with the OP he is not good ODI bwoler right now but more importantly though we need our best pacemen fit for test cricket. Tests is far and away the paramount cricket format, we need him to be fit for that. At the very least ensure he does not play pointless ODIs like the upcoming triseries. Pujara is a different case, he has proven himself a good Ltd Overs bat in domestics and should have been in the ODI squad instead of Vijay

Repeat again. OP is saying Yadav MUST NOT PLAY ODIS for one year. What has that got to do with managing work load. Which I have said is required for any bowler, manage work load. Now all agreeing with me when say miss odd game etc to manage it, thats totally different from dark age thinking of NO ODIS for Yadav. This tri series he should play. Dhoni never even gave him 10 overs as bowled himself. If had tough test series were bowled loads of overs then rest. But he has not had that, so no idea why he should be rested now. He is getting overs in and getting fit, rest is not needed now

Umesh and varun would be a deadly combo in both forms of the game. Our bowling line up should look like this- umesh , varun, shami, shukla and bhuvi. This attack can match any bowling attack in the world..

so if umesh is a wicket taking bowler. How come he has the least wickets of all the Indian bowlers in the champions trophy? why is he averaging 49 with the ball in a tournament india did well in?

Hmmm maybe no ODIs maybe a bit too far, and youre right in that experience will make him a better ODI bowler. Looking at it from the workload point of view, his is a bowling style that is pretty heavy on the body and his ODI appearences should be limited.

He got 2 best batsmen in the world out against SA and won us the game. In the finals he got another Cook which is was the most important wicket.

he has 4 wickets in 5 matches and 1 wicket per 9 overs bowled. Whichever way you try to dress it in this tournament and his entire 22 match career to date (A) he has not been a wicket taker for india, 22 matches played and 22 wicket taken. 1 wicket per match never taken 4 or 5 wickets. Compare that to 7/103 in tests. (B) he has not been economical for india. © His list A record in the domestics is also poor where he averages 43 with the ball and has an economy of nearly 6. His IPL record is not great either. Now i am all for giving him a chance as he is the fastest around. But maybe a solid year in test cricket might do him good rather than some odi series at the moment I dont mind giving him a full run in the odis we play in the next series. But if those stats dont show improvement its time to look elsewhere temporarily. Aaron for eg is fast and does have good list A record. Wait for him to recover and see if he is the express pace bowler for india.

He should be in the LOI scheme of things but no way in hell he should be played in a say a Home bilateral series against Srilanka,Westindies or Newzealand or all games of a 7 match ODI series etc. He should play once in a while like Steyn does and important tournaments like T20 WC,CB series,or an overseas ODI series

This is pretty much the same i wanted to happen for Ishant right after Australian tour. But it didn't happen. Dont think it will happen to Umesh as well.
