Cook is a "method" captain not innovative or instinctive. He just goes in with bunch of strategies and hope his players execute them well. So far his players have responded reasonably well. The day his players start being a little scratchy he will be tested. Dhoni rarely attends team meetings. Who do you rate as the best currently? As Carnish said, among the current lot, Smith's the best.

Led his side well both as a player and captain. South Africans hate ABDV to be their captain. They think ABDV is too laid back to be their captain. Smith definitely brings in more intensity. Cronje is the best they ever had. Smith is second best.

But he made this team.. Literally helped each and every player in this team to set in and become world class. And touring away from home his attitude is best..and most importantly he leads from front.. Who else is better ?

i cant defend my statement anymore :hmmmm2: with no ponting and dhoni being poor at test arena he is the best atm

I think Warnie was talking about Test. Did he not play with the same squad in ODIs as well and gained way less success than Test? That shows he is a good Test captain. 100+ Tests as captain surely makes him one of the best.

There was period when SA during India tour would play for draw from day one. I remember Andrew hall's 100. They bored the hell out of us. They never used to go for wins from the get go. They will play defensively and see where the match goes. Based on that they will make their move. One of the reason they couldn't whitewash teams as much as Australia did in their prime.

south africa were struggling back then and team was not really strong so they went with that approach . but ever since they got stronger smith too has gone for results. ponting after he got weaker team was not good anymore. as a captain u have to make decision according to strength u cant be agressive like australia without teamlike australia. clarke tries to be aggressive and at home it worked but they also lost test against new zealand at home ,whitewash in india and lost a home again against south africa

The reason why SA have done well in India is because they play such passive aggressive game. They are not dominating and will never be - irrespective of whether they have a good team or not.
