No he did not play in Sharjah 1998 - Marillier played the scoop shot against Australia at Perth in 2001, the earliest I remember. Australia won the game by 1 run. More like 1996-8. By 1999, Gurusinghe has left, Ranatunga has lost it, and Aravinda was not at his swashbuckling self. The replacements were no where as good in ODI format.

Yes, Sri Lanka became good after that WC ... before that WC no one expected them to even compete. It was an unbelievable performance. I agree the same about India in 1983 although that Indian team had some proven members although not so much in ODIs.
