actually that one innings in WC 2011 aside Dhoni has a poor record in major limited over tournaments. He sucked when we won the champions league. will be interesting to post stats on Dhoni in WC matches in total Dhoni in WC matches in 2011 Dhoni in T20 matches in WCS Dhoni in T20 matches in WC 2007 Dhoni in Champions trophy matches Dhoni in Champions trophy matches 2013 Apart from the final of 2011 WC. Not many major innings in tournaments of note.....
He was a poor T20 player irrespective of whether it was world cup or any other format. Even in IPL his strike rate was only around 110 or something until last couple of years. Leave that format. In other tournaments apart from world cup 2011 he didn't get much of an opportunity. In CT he played grand total of 2 matches. Last time 1 match. In 2006 he played 3 i think. World cup 2011 is the only tournament he had somewhat decent opportunity compared to others. He was terribly out of form. Ye he came out with half decent numbers even though well below his own standard of 50 plus average. His 91 in final should really take care of his failures in other outings in the world cup.

As far as I can remember the last T20 world cup and the NZL T20(Correct me on the timeline of this) happened between the last 2 IPL's where MSD still sucked....ANyways we all seem to be under a common consensus that Dhoni sucks as a Test and T20 player....This thread was about over-hyping his ODI skills and yes he is a modern ODI great but still over-hyped by his fans

Your last line is paradoxical. You admit he is a modern ODI great. yet you say he is over hyped. :giggle:

I also think Afridi is a modern ODI great....Look at his numbers and some of the performances but that doesn't mean Jack PS-Before you twist my argument I am not comparing them

That kind of underlines your quality of player assessment. Not worth the salt. :winky:

Why not...I dont want to make this a thread about Afretard but nearly 7500 runs and 360 wickets does qualify him atleast in the top 100......And I kind of figured and saw it coming you would take an example to twist my argument....Once again let me break it down to you-DHoni is a great...Not the best ever.....not even top 10,maybe a case can be made for top 20... In India may be top 10 after SRT,Kapi,Ganguly,Kumble and Yuvraj.....case can be made by Dravid and azhar but i rate Dhoni above those 2 in OdI's

Also I t's hilarious that people keep bringing Rohit as some sort of ploy to derail this argument....Let me tell you this in T20, Rohit>>>>Daylight>>>>Dhoni :giggle:

^:hysterical: the Dhoni fanboys' arguments keep getting better and better.... Reminds me of my childhood days when someone would be owned in an argument and they would just be shouting over the other guy and acting all obnoxious to derail the argument :sniffle: Thanks for the memories

I made the pathetic argyments really? I pulled something straight out of Stats Guru for people to dissect,I laid down clearly what I interpreted from what i see? what's the issue? IPL crap,ROhit Sharma arguments were brought on by people who were in Love with dhoni and CSK but were just confused as to why after I laid it all down for all to see.

What stats.. you said he scored only against SL i proved otherwise. Your arguments are really stupid.

You are the one giving credit to only and only Dhoni. We would have won final too if Dhoni had got out cheaply. We have won against Lanka many many times. Weren't we chasing against Aussies? My point was after Dhoni failed someone had to score in those matches' date= whether Sachin or UV. Things like match which mattered, innings which mattered belittle what was the perfect example of a team effort
Seriously?

As i said before, 12 matches in the WC and he averages 34 (boosted heavily by not outs) http://stats.espncricinfo.com/guru?caughthigh=;enddefault=2013-07-11;conchigh=;conclow=;wicketslow=;dismissal=0;runslow=;playerid=7593;bowposition=0;homeaway=0;dismissalslow=;scheduleddays=0;notopposition=0;stumpedhigh=;finals=0;dismissalshigh=;end=2013-07-11;viewtype=aro_list;groundid=0;daynight=0;captain=0;startdefault=2004-12-23;continent=0;notcountry=0;innings=0;class=odiplayer;caughtlow=;team=0;result=0;season=0;start=2004-12-23;caughttype=0;bpof=0;seriesresult=0;opposition=0;submit=1;csearch=;ballshigh=;stumpedlow=;wicketshigh=;country=0;toss=0;overslow=;filter=basic;sdb=player;tourneyid=2;runshigh=;scheduledovers=0;dnp=0;overshigh=;ballslow=;batposition=0;followon=0;recent=;keeper=0;.cgifields=viewtype barring that 91 not out his next highest score is 34. Champions Trophy 11 matches averages 20 with the bat and a highest score of 51. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/guru?caughthigh=;enddefault=2013-07-11;conchigh=;conclow=;wicketslow=;dismissal=0;runslow=;playerid=7593;bowposition=0;homeaway=0;dismissalslow=;scheduleddays=0;notopposition=0;stumpedhigh=;finals=0;dismissalshigh=;end=2013-07-11;viewtype=aro_list;groundid=0;daynight=0;captain=0;startdefault=2004-12-23;continent=0;notcountry=0;innings=0;class=odiplayer;caughtlow=;team=0;result=0;season=0;start=2004-12-23;caughttype=0;bpof=0;seriesresult=0;opposition=0;submit=1;csearch=;ballshigh=;stumpedlow=;wicketshigh=;country=0;toss=0;overslow=;filter=basic;sdb=player;tourneyid=34;runshigh=;scheduledovers=0;dnp=0;overshigh=;ballslow=;batposition=0;followon=0;recent=;keeper=0;.cgifields=viewtype So your talking about a guy who has basically got 2 50s in major ODI tournaments over a period of about 23 matches over the past 7/8 years. You compre MSD's stats in major tournaments to somebody like Zaheer and Sachin and you can see both of these guys have performed in major tournaments and have averages more (less in case of bowling stats) than their career average Now Virat Kohli is a young man and can very well be a winner for India but i think even he is another guy who averages significantly lower than his career average than in major tournaments. Though Dhoni will do down as an ODI great for India. I will always rate Yuvraj Singh higher than him. In 2007 T20 WC and in 2011 Yuvi was a major force (2011 especially) who helped India win with bat and ball. Yuvraj Sachin Dev daylight MSD

well people talk as if there was no batting remaining when Dhoni came to bat. During that final you had Yuvraj singh who was yet to come and looked in good touch during that innings and was in the form of his life in the tournament

By the same assumption we can assume plenty of batting was left even after Sachin :hmmm: Anyway dhoni scored irrespective of whether batting was left or not.. Form is of no use when he doesn't score when it matters
