Everyone only talking about SRT but forgot how Dravid and VVS went. They were our heroes too.
But this also shows we are hypocrites. Dravid and Ganguly also deserved great farewells. Maybe if not as good as this' date=' at-least half as good.[/quote'] Ganguly did get a decent farewell? Why didnt you yourself go and cheer for Ganguly like fans did for Sachin? People just don't wake up one day and say, hey this guy did a lot for us, lets go and cheer him. It's only the emotional connect which matters BCCI could have arranged for a decent farewell but the news, the hype and fan cheering would never have been on the scale of Sachin, whether in India or abroad

Yeah I remember the lack of crowds at Nagpur and Mohali in that 2008 series.

This I also find it ridiculous when Bangladeshis make OTT comments about foreigners who had nice words to say about us. Its good to like someone but not to make him a hero just because he made a positive statement. The same way I feel that Sehwag was no less a class player(in his peak) just because he did not like Bangladesh
Bangladeshis and Indians are nothing alike. Try to check out Sammy's stats in IPL, its not bad. He picks himself in sun risers squad, and please this is t20 not test, WI are a gun t20 side.

To be fair Ganguly was never really that big a player in test matches. He was an ODI great for India.
So how many Indian batsmen have scored more TEST runs than Ganguly? There must be dozens if Ganguly is not a great from India?

Chandan, you must have heard "people have poor memory" That's the notion we have in India and actually most part of the world. Whenever someone retires, his popularity goes down and clearly people do forget that. Only those who followed Indian Cricket closely, who woke up all night to watch India play every game, would remember how good Ganguly was compared to other bats we have had.

5 have scored more runs than him. But you need to look at the average as well. Ganguly is averging 42. Quite frankly i would rate people like Vengsarkar and Vishwanath ahead of him. Even MSD is well on course to overtake Ganguly's test run count. Does not make MSD a great test batsman either. Will probably be indias best keeper batsman.

Actually, it's people that choose to forget how poor Ganguly was as a batsman for a significant part of his captaincy that have the poor memories. He was for a time, a total embarrassment.

Outside the subcontinent barring England Ganguly does not have great numbers. In that sense Ganguly shadows Vengsarkar as they were both good players in India (at home) and England. Not saying Ganguly was not worth his place in the test side. A solid batsman at test level an a good captain. But he would never make my all time Indian test squad of 15. What they should have done is had a special goodbye dada odi series. Cause Ganguly is an Indian ODI great. Would walk into my all time indian odi squad of 15. You could say by becoming captain Ganguly allowed Dravid Laxman and Sachin to perform unburdened. Guys like Sidhu Ganguly Vengsarkar Amarnath Vishwanath. These guys were good solid batsman for India at test level. Not legends. Quite frankly i would rate Sehwag above all 5 of of them. While Gambhir despite his issues now would be on par with them. Polly Umrigar would be just above them. But not in the same league as a Dravid Laxman Gavaskar Hazare Sachin etc.

Vengsarkar was a very good batsman. Had one of the best purple patch by an Indian. Some fantastic knocks on very tough wickets. His 102 at Leeds. His 166 at cuttack against lanka might look silly now. But that was an unplayable pitch against any random bowler.

If at all India do have to arrange another farewell it should be for Viru and allow him to play 100 tests v Bangladesh or somebody like that.

All the players i listed have played some very fine innings. Tier 3 Sidhu Ganguly Vengsarkar Amarnath Vishwanath Vijay Manjrekar Gambhir Tier 2 Azahar (i dont like him but hey) Polly Umrigar (helped India get established) Sehwag Tier 1 Hazare Laxman Dravid Sachin Gavaskar Thats my general classification of Indian test batsman who have played more than 20 test matches and are retired or close to calling quits.

But strictly speaking on merit -basis , Sammy is an outstanding T20 player and World T20 winning Captain .. With quinton decock and Sangakkara already there , it makes sense to have a non-w/k captain to ensure that Sanga and De **** can be rotated for w/k duties:finger:
I do like Sammy. He has the right attitude and can be handy player in T20s but I think he is on a downward slide. I would prefer to Shikar Dhawan to get the captaincy.
