Ponting was very good. You could put him almost anywhere. On the fence, at the point, short left anywhere. Not only he took difficult catches, but rarely dropped any easy one. Collingwood was very good fielder. Probably best from England in last 2 decades.

Jaddu is very good at fence.

Tough call' date=' but I'd say Jhodes wasn't the best. He was the best in his era, but some of the current bunch are superior.[b'] Just because Jhodes set the benchmark 15 years ago, doesn't mean that benchmark hasn't been pushed higher. I think it has been pushed up higher. I wouldn't include Yuvraj in the lsit cause I've seen him drop a heck of a lot of catches. I've also seen Dilshan and Warner drop a few. Ponting, Symonds and ABD I've seen very ver few drops and they were able to field in all positions. Anyways, no one is selected on the basis of their fielding alone, so it shouldn't matter.

I've seen no logic or evidence for this notion that modern day cricket = better than by default to cricket from yesteryears. Cricket, like many complex sport, does not improve with time linearly. certain things do, such as average competency of fielding or average competency of wicketkeepers at batting but its more like a share market stock graph, with improvements and quality increasing or decreasing with passage of time. The best era of cricket I've seen personally are unquestionably in the 1980-1985 period and from 1992 to 2001 period. Today's cricket is pretty much B standard compared to cricketers from these eras. And FYI, i think the best fielder in cricket TODAY is ABDV- when he is not keeping that is. Jadeja is close but I'd still give it to ABDV. And the best fielder I've ever seen ? No, not Rhodes, its Gus Logie. His ability to throw down the stumps at will from cover or extra cover was unbelievable and a class ahead of anyone i've ever seen. Just as athletic as Rhodes too.

Andrew Symonds was just brilliant.... Currently Jadeja but i doubt his stump hitting ability.... Gibbs went down after that 99 Debacle but he was as good as Rhodes one point of time, Stump hitting ability Ponting this is where I think he was better than Rhodes. Other Brilliant fielders ABDV,Dilshan,Collingwood,Raina

I have followed from 1996 and i agree those days of early mornings with full stadiums and so much passion all over in tests is sorely missed.

IIRC, a lot of the test matches were boring draws.
