Many nations do this, otherwise every single non-western nation's ambassador is failing to meet minimum wage standards. The only difference is, Devyani was foolish enough to get into a personal contract instead of a government one with her maid. Devyani got into a GoI contract rather than a US government contract. Even if she did get a US government contract, it wouldn't hold up in US court. The most foolish thing Devyani did was keep Sangeeta Richards passport in her possession.

India still would not have minded the expulsion, indictment, moral lectures, propaganda on CNN etc. being understanding of american position and for the sake of bilateral relationship between 2 countries. Arrest(be it only for a few hrs) is not fine with people here. In addition to expelling US diplomat, we should also have shown arrest(even for 1 hr) for some violation which had been ignored. So, Government of India has disappointed the parliament and the people. 2. We (and ALOT of countries) simply can't afford to pay $1500 to workers (some countries like congo, nepal etc pay even their diplomats less than $1500 i guess). But we gonna still genuinely need workers(office workers, maids, drivers etc) sometimes. The rent of a studio apartment on googling was found to be $2000. So we are (most probably) gonna pay $600 only + the stuff like food, accommodation, free weekly leisure trips, medical expenses would be adjusted for $900. $600 is the max we can afford (which is 4 times what the workers would get if employed in India, he/she won't get the free stuff). Workers are now gonna be Govt.'s employees rather than diplomats employees. That would be the difference in paper work.

Your masters use the word 'ally' and you fall for it. Because at the end of the day, the British culture, if boiled down to a nutshell, is that of a pompous old fool. Appeal to the pomp of the British ( by throwing around words like 'allies' even when you have troops present in the brits land) and you will get anything. Everyone knows that. Let us know when you guys grow enough BALLS to say the Yanks to feck off and fight their wars themselves, instead of being lambs to the slaughter for American profit. Then, your nation will matter to all but tinpot dictators.

The other country is adding wealth equal to half of Britain every year to the economy.We know that. Your 'cultural superpower-dom died the day Freddie Mercury died. Since then, you have been nothing more than a footnote to the American culture, batting at par with us Canucks. Just like the Turks did in the 1800s, you Brits exist as anything noteworthy due to the sheer momentum of the stunning overachievement and glory of your ancestors. Your jolly old fried fish and kidney pie munchers are also fleeing your depressing island of dead-end lives in their droves to the US, Canada and Australia too. We are far from being the epicenter of global poverty, which is still, sub-saharan Africa by a huge margin. On the other hand, our nation actually matters at the global stage. Nobody gives two shits about British Foreign policy because your nation does not have the spine to do anything but send its soldiers to their death at America's behest. Last i checked, we told the yanks to feck off in Iraq, despite being logistically better placed than any other US ally to partake.
