Dhoni makes our collective pulse race not only because he’s aggressive, but because his aggression exhibits itself in shots I’ve never seen anyone else play. I can think of three right away. The first and least of them is the peculiar flip shot that he plays where he lays the bat face up on the pitch and tips the ball over his shoulder in the direction of long-leg. The second one is the forcing shot he plays square on the off side, with both feet off the ground, his legs scissoring to make momentum in mid-air. Of all the cricketers that have ever donned Indian colors, there is not one cricketer who can remotely come close to changing the mindset of the entire country, as much as Dhoni has done. Not Kapil, not Sunny and neither Sachin. One of my pet peeves growing up was to see how little International cricket was "allowed" to be played in East India(in interest of complete disclosure I am a Bihari myself). The bulk of International cricket was always played at Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore etc leaving absolute pittance for Jamshedpur, Guwahati, Cuttack etc. Calcutta obviously being a great exception. And when one would argue how fans from these parts deserved to see as much cricket as those in Mohali they were often patronized with a "Ah but first you build a cricket stadium worth its salt, and Five Star Hotels etc etc". Well turns out we didn't really need a world class stadium, all we needed was a world class player! This may really turn out to be where MSD has been a game changer. Single handedly, without any agenda, he has flipped the impression of Ranchi (and Jharkhand) and if you see LOI and T20s being played there (Test cricket still being a far cry), it is not because Rest of India has suddenly seen the light, it is because Dhoni has single handedly made it seem natural, and rightful. That is what he does for India too. We look like a team that belongs on top echelon. Knowing a few people from Ranchi, Dhoni had registered on my mind much before he made his International presence. One of my buddies was his senior in school and I remember very well him calling me when Dhoni was first selected for India-A trip. He was pretty excited, I was not. Remember this was the era of Vijay Dahia, Parthiv Patel, Ratra etc. And there was the case of Saba Karim, from Bihar and Bengal, who had flattered to deceive at International level. Another keeper was not really super sexy in the grand scheme of things. We wanted a super bat or a fast bowler. But then Dhoni's story started emerging more and more. While in National newspaper it was about his Ranji and other success stories, in the local newspaper (Ranchi Express etc) it was about him jumping on scooter going from a Mecon Ground to HEC to play games and local team going - Dhoni aa gaya, khilao re isko. Often it would be laced with stories that you will only find in local newspapers, and understood only by locals. Like the time when he hit sixes at Sector II (forgetting the sectors now), that went out of the ground, across the road, and finally into Russian Engineers Hostel! Reading it was a whole different dimension. And so Dhoni has grown today. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child, maybe it takes a town to raise an Indian captain! Only in Dhoni's case the return on investment has been many times over, now the Indian captain is raising his town.

Dhoni's brother, Narendra, joins Samajwadi Party Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s elder brother joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. During his tour to the Maoist-hit state in September, Akhilesh backed Jharkhand’s demand for a special status — which has been rejected by the Centre.
