What the hell! these selector clowns seriously think Suresh Raina is not a viable candidate for spot in the lower middle order for WC 15?! Suresh is just absolutely MONEY when it comes to ODIs. He's arguably India's best fielder and probably our second best batsmen chasing (after Kohli). And for those ignoramus who have no idea about Raina's batting credentials in ODIs abroad, go look up his record in IPL 2009 which was played in South Africa. He was the leading run scorer among all Indians in that tournament and the only 3 guys who were ahead of him in the runs tally were Hayden, Gilchrist and ABDV. Dropping Raina from the ODI squad is blasphemy. He is still young and has plenty to offer to our side at this stage of his career. This whole thing about WC 15 being played in Australia in bouncy pitches is an absolutely over-rated thing. Sure, the pitches in Aus may be by and large harder and offer more bounce than Indian pitches, but these days, ODI pitches in most countries are extremely flat and offer plenty of runs. It will be a criminal mistake to leave out Raina from our ODI. Have we not learned our lessons from the vicotrious WC 11 campaign? The team persisted with Yusuf for the league phases with the delusion that he will fire us to great glories, but it didnt take them long to discover what they were missing from Suresh. Suresh was duly included for the knock-outs and lo and behold, he went on to play two extremely crucial innings against both Aus and Pak in the quarters and the semis.

IPL?Seriously?even Vijay had a damn good CLT20 in SA IIRC.Doesnt mean he can play ODIs Raina has a pretty bad record in SA,Eng,Aus.only did well in last NZ series on flat beds. nobody doubts Raina's position in SC,but the way he plays quick bowling, specially when its short leaves a question mark

Anyone who thinks we have a replacement for Raina in the ODI side needs to get his heard checked . Hes one of the best LOI players ever for us . Send him up the order his avg will go up as well . As for the shortball weakness , there is no one worse than Dhawan & he will be facing the likes of MJ and Steyn upfront .

Raina is much worse.Dhawan's problem is technical, whereas it is in the mind.he doesnt come in to front foot for full pitched ball due to fear of bouncers.always on backfoot just see how Dhawan dealt with Johnson in ODI series as compared to Raina

You didn’t just compare M.Vijay’s body of work in ODIs and Raina’s, did you? :headshake: There’s a reason why Suresh Raina is the all-time highest run getter in all IPLs combined. The dude is just a killer when it comes to limited overs cricket. For a while during 2009-10 season, he was our dangerous batsmen during chases too, until Kohli usurped him from that seat. I have seen him play ODI games where he simply refused to give up and kept attacking, when everyone else in the indian team had given up already. He has the PERFECT temperament for ODIs. Players like him don’t come around too often (same with Yuvi, except that he is unfortunately too old now and just cant play..) And this whole thing about WC being in Australia with bouncy pitches and all – Lets remember one thing. Nobody wants to see a low scoring tournament where the average score in 210. I can bet you my bottom dollar that the pitches for WC’15 will almost definitely be batsmen friendly. Sure, there will be carry and bounce, but not so much that the batsmen cannot play. And I think somebody else mentioned it- you put Raina in any of the various other crappy ODI teams going around (England, NZ, West Indies, maybe Pakistan) and he is their premier batsmen of the side. Unfortunately for him with India, there have been so many super-talented top order guys who emerged for us in the last 6-7 years (Gambhir, Kohli, Dhawan, Rohit), he never completely got to showcase his entire talent. Suresh Raina is a MUST for any indian squad. You have to be barking mad to think otherwise. He is an attacking batsmen, our best fielder and most of all, he's seen it all at that extremely crucial no.6 spot. He's sacrificed so much for the collective goal of the Indian team over the last 5-6 years and we shouldnt be repaying by dropping him from the ODI squad.

I mentioned Vijay to point out how IPL is irrelevant in judging for ODIs,you again mentioned that. Raina does have an attacking mindset and is most certainly a key player for us when we play in SC.But abroad you have to adapt and pick hourses for courses. Its about picking the best team for the WC keeping conditions oppositions, pitches etc. in mind.If Raina or somebody else doesnt fit in it,so be it.Its not about repaying him. Sure the pitches not be 210 types but won't be pattas.Seeing how he struggled vs MJ in recent ODIs and has generally fared against short stuff,it doesnt inspire too much confidence. I'd rather go with guys like Gambhir,Pujara,Rahane ahead of him.

There’s no such thing called the ‘best ODI XI for the conditions..’ it may happen in tests, but not for ODIs, primarily because the pitches across the world for ODI games come mostly in 3 flavors – Flat, flatter and flattest. Nobody in their right minds would prepare seaming friendly, bouncy pitches for the world cup in ’15. It’s a premier tournament with diverse sponsors. The direction would be to prepare good pitches, full of runs that make the sponsors happy. Remember, the last time we played a WC in traditionally bouncy conditions (SAF, in 2003), the pitches were so flat we thought at one point SRT himself was on target to score a 1000 runs in the tournament! The ICC rigged the entire format of WC ’11 and reverted back the ‘5 league games + QC + SF + Final’ for the first time since 96, just to ensure that India didn’t get eliminated from the tournament for as long as possible. Do you really think Cricket Australia will have the balls to prepare bouncy pitches where we get bowled out for 120? No way! And reg. the Johnson point – Mitchell Johnson is right now in this incredible, beast-mode where even God would have trouble facing him with a straight face. If he can make an accomplished English batting line-up look like sheer novices from the nearly division 3 club, it is no surprise Raina struggled against him. Gambhir is already spent. Pujara has promise, but is untested in ODIs. Rahane is the best bet among the three. But the key difference between these guys and Raina is that he’s a finisher. He has that unique skill-set required to finish games. And most ODI games are decided in the last 5 overs of the match.

And one more thing about Raina that does not get mentioned as often as it should – He’s a great team chemistry guy. He’s the jokester who’s running around pouring cold water into people’s t-shirts. He is absolutely selfless who would bat at no.10 if the team wanted him to. If there was an award for the most number of hugs given to team-mates by a cricketer on the field, Raina would come 1st, 2nd and 3rd, every single year for the last 7-8 years. His ODI batting was considered so good, they even appointed him captain of the team once, while Sehwag, Bhajji and Yuvraj were still in the team. How can he go from that, to not being selected at all, while he’s still in his prime!? #mindblown

Rohit, Dhawan, Kohli, Dhoni, Pujara, Raina will form the top six. Raina is the only part time option there. India will be forced to go with 5 bowlers with no top order batsman capable of bowling.

WC 2003 Final was flat but all matches werent.I remember Nehra,Srinath,Zak having on great game each atleast and guys like Lee,Anderson,Bichel doing well too. Also there was huge gap between SRT and 2nd highest run scorer in that WC IIRC. not 120,technically correct batsmen or ones who can handle bounce like Dhoni will do well but I'm not sure of guys like Raina who seem almost scared of short stuff Johnson in India series wasn't unplayable. The pitches were of flattest category and Rohit,Dhawan,Kohli,Dhoni made loads of runs.yet Raina and Yuvraj seemed as if they were batting at WACA. And its not about MJ alone.others have troubled him too.Raina nowadays goes on the backfoot even before the ball is released expecting a bouncer. GG isnt spent yet.has few issues against swing though.More importantly he has a good record in Australia. Dhoni is the finisher we need.No.7 would most certainly be an allrounder.need to identify no.4 and 5.
