Raghav_12 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Gavaskar doesn't put on an accent. He just tries to put more emphasis on proper pronunciation. Native English speakers pronounce t- as th-' date= Gavaskar overdoes it and makes it sound forced. I always thought Native Tamil speakers do so.

You tend to pick it up if you live here for long time. It's not the accent, but pronunciation of few words which sound more American than Indian and people confuse it with accents. It's common if you have lived here for about 8-10 years your accent would change. Though it shouldn't completely.

But over a period i lost it and back to Indian accent. There is no such thing as bad accent. Choice of words and language make you sound intelligent not the accent. Unfortunately most of the college students in India feel accent make them look more sophisticated.

When I was in high school here in States, I learned the correct American pronunciation of the word "Aluminium" In India, we pronounce it as alu+mean+ni+um. But here in states, we keep the letter "I" as silent and prounce it as alu+min+um. Now I used to speak it the iNDIAN way, but in high school to adjust to my Chemistry class, I started speaking the way I described it in the latter example, and it sounded more american. That's just the adjustment and this is is what eventually becomes our regular language. Words like schedule, when you pronounce it in American way, doesn't really mean you are using an accent.
