So ricky ponting is the worlds best captain ever.Captaincy for me is not only about winning or losing its about team building and leadership.Guys like Border' date=Clive they built teams .I liked ricky ponting ,dravid,Imran as a captain as they would lead from the front even though they had shortcomings.

Ricky had damn good team so did dhobi but unlike dhobi ricky did try to win every match so he sure was damn good captain.

England lost 5-0 (out of 5 matches) to them twice in that decade; Pakistan played 3 series against them under Imran's captaincy and never lost. A lot of credit goes Imran's own performance as well, he was the man-of-the-series in 2 out of the 3 series, probably the most gritty and hard-working cricketer the world has seen.

If we had a good batsman or bowler as our captain, he would have tried to motivate the team with his performances when eveerything was going astray. Dhoni was a liability even as a player on those tours, how could he make a good captain?

Dhoni against non minnows outside SC - Played 19, Won 3, lost 10, drawn 6, W/L = 0.3 Imran against non minnows outside SC - Played 18, won 3, lost 5, drawn 10, W/L = 0.6 And Dhoni's ten losses have come without a single win in between. Now Imran would be proud of that record.

But this thread is not about whether Imran was a great captain - it is Imran vs Dhoni. Dhoni is a very defensive and biased captain, and without India's tremendous batting depth in the limited format he would have achieved zilch. Even in ODIs, Dhoni's overall record is very mediocre outside the SC, with a W/L ratio of just 0.6. Dhoni is a fair weather captain, that is all. He is a home bully captain, and when you think that BCCI has the best infrastructure and funding among all nations, his achievements are very much overrated. When Imran was captain, they were not the best funded team - the financial leaders used to be England and Australia. They were some serious limitations on what a subcontinental side could achieve during the 80s. But BCCI is now the leader and has every resource at its disposal, but India is not even a world class team when they step outside India. And you think Imran is overrated. :haha:

If Imran was all the great as he is made out to be by many of here he would have won more tests period,He had the biggest home field advantage any captain ever had and he captained almost same no of matches as Dhoni, To look at how aggressive and innovative Khan Saab was as a captain we need not look further than Sachin's debut series where Pakistan had everything going for them except two men in white coats and the result was big 0-0 draw. We sometimes take Dhoni for granted and he gets lot of abuse but once taking over that captain's role every Indian player has become conservative. They rather lose 0-7 and draw one test in 8 tests rather than going for a win and risk being 0-8. In India draw is still considered half a win at least for Indian captains.
