Who was the best puller/hooker from the sub cont?

imo he was the best player ever from the sub cont but definitely under achieved because he just didn't give a ****. yeah i said it, better than tendulkar.

Arjuna Ranatunga was better than De SIlva... Its just that he was over weight so didnt run much and his tummy came in between many back foot strokes... otherwise he would have bettered Bradman

i'd say kohli > tendulkar when it comes to back foot play as well. not that it's much of a compliment.

IMO there is no question it was Aravinda De Silva. can't really think of anybody even close to him. ufYPRA0au9s

Umm. Gavaskar. Aravinda is not fit to lace his shoes. Tendulkar too, when it comes to the pull. Though Tendulkar did not hook often, he rarely ever missed and he had the technically harder hook mastered, the one where the ball keeps down and goes for a four, not the one where the ball goes for a six. Majid Khan too, was an awesome hooker & puller of the ball. Jimmy Amarnath too, a great hooker and puller of the ball. Dravid was also just as good as Aravinda. IMO, the quality of pull shots played by subcontinental players, is as follows: 1. Majid Khan 2. Tendulkar 3. Amarnath 4. Aravinda 5. Dravid/Gavaskar Quality of hook shot: 1. Gavaskar 2. Amarnath 3. Tendulkar 4.majid 5. aravinda

Aravinda did have the skills to take on any and all kind of bowling, just like Tendulkar did but its an insult to Aravinda's professionalism to say he didnt give a crap. Aravinda has a much poorer record because Aravinda was much poorer than God in the major aspect of batting: concentration. There was another who would've easily been a 50+ average player in TC if he was not a concentration fail: Carl Hooper. Aravinda was the asian version of Hooper. On his day, looking better than the best. But those days were rare because Aravinda was prone to getting out to concentration lapses. Just like hooper. Its a mental thing, not everyone has the ability to be flawless for a long period of time frequently enough to be considered great.

i have never seen gavaskar live so i can't comment. can u point me to a clip where he plays the pull shot well. i have seen a bunch of his clips and most of have front foot shots. dravid is a joke surely? when did he have a reputation of being a hooker of the ball? he obviously was a good player of the short ball and played it by ducking and weaving out of the way. i have never seen anybody worthwhile say he was a ferocious puller of the ball like benaud does in the first clip.

yeah nice shots but if u watch videos of any batsman with 20000 runs i'm sure u'll be able to find 20 nice pull shots in their career. most of these shots are pulls anyway, aravinda used to hook the ball a lot.

Tendy has done that. So till then, i don't care much for awesome powers of concentration against Bangladesh or at home where the pitches really suit his style of batting. Kallis, i will admit is the behemoth of concentration but as you said, its the combination of all that makes God...well, God. He is the only batsman of the modern era to end up averaging atleast 40+ everywhere he played. Only batsman to have multiple tours of RSA, England and Australia where he dominated their bowling. He is not quite the concentration monster Kallis was, but he is bloody close. And unlike Kallis, Tendulkar is a much more complete batsman who's dominated ATG bowling attacks- something Kallis notoriously failed at when Wasim-Waqar or Ambrose-Walsh or McWarne were around. Desilva is simply not in that class of batsmanship because he was not good at concentration. He was good in his strokeplay, yes but Tendulkar has that aspect covered quite easily over deSilva. Allround strokeplay, there is none more complete than Tendulkar to've played the game. That includes Bradman. For Bradman never ramped the ball over the slips. When you combine it all: success against the best, success against the best in their backyard, allround success at home and away, longetivity, range of strokeplay, consistency and such factors, there is only one batsman from the last 20+ years that ticks all the boxes: Tendulkar.
