There was a further division in 1978 when Indira Gandhi formed a new party with her followers - Congress (I) with I standing for Indira. The new party won the 1980 elections and then in 1981 the EC recognized it as the real Indian National Congress. So today's Congress is most certainly not the party which was led by Jawaharlal Nehru.

I am pretty vague about this, as I remember my grandpa said about this. Pretty sure if we could talk with grandies, we may get about the political situation during that time.

The best part about replying to you is that I just need to paste my previous comment. Here it goes. The thing was Modi/Jaitley were beating their chest that Gujarat was riot free since 2003. The other states - weren't. Now, since it was already an acceptable fact that the other states where not riot free - the question you raise is called a red herring. Some people tried to explain you in that thread and I let them but it seems you can't get that simple point. Yes, I am. You can't compare Nehru getting a day named him and Modi getting a day named after him. That is an out of place comparison.
You feel that my question was a red herring. I feel your thread was a half truth. You can leave it at that or can continue debating.

I don't understand what is the half-truth when I have clearly accepted that other state HAVE riots and might be worse. I wasn't pointing out that riots don't take place in other states - if you felt so, you missed the point. The point of that thread was to show that Gujarat wasn't riot free since 2003 like Jaitley, Modi claim brazenly.

I have to commend your ability of beating around the bush. You seem to have perfected that art. By creating a thread that exclusively points out riots happeneing in one state while conveniently ommitting other states, you were trying to paint a picture as though only Gujarat suffered from riots, that too only when Modi was the CM. There is a Yiddish proverb that says, " A half truth is a whole lie" and you were found guilty of indulging in just that. You can debate all you want on this and you can go back and check that thread and many other posters also pointed that out to you, but your prejudiced brain cannot for one moment think from a neutral point of view. So, give it a rest and do not tax it too much. Also, the "keyboard generation" and "coffee table analyst" that you deride - let me point out to you that you are as much a part of that same generation and as much a "coffee table analyst" as everyone else on this forum. It is funny that you mentioned that Nehru/Congress = Bad is my attitude derived from a single line comparing Childrens' Day with how mad Modi haters would be if he named a day to be celebrated on his birthday. Is that all it takes to determine an attitude that something is always bad? If that is the case, then you have many posts on this forum that clearly displays your attitude that BJP/Modi == Terrible. But, I am sure you will debate that point too even though almost everyone who frequents this section of the forum on a fairly regular basis knows that.

Soon, hire a rash driver, pay more insurance premium

NEW DELHI: Vehicle owners could end up paying higher insurance premium for their vehicles if they employ "risky and unsafe drivers" or they themselves drive in such fashion. This is one of the key reforms being incorporated in the new Motor Vehicle & Traffic Safety law. Over the next 1-2 years, data relating to drivers and their offences would be recorded and available online through a centralised database. This will enable vehicle owners to verify the credentials of a driver and get his driving record. While at present the insurance is linked only to vehicles, under the new law it will be linked both to vehicle and record of its drivers. The change is being mooted as in majority of crashes, drivers are found to be responsible and there have are numerous examples from different cities where the same driver is found guilty of repeat offences. The proposed law will provide for higher penalty and negative points for repeat offenders. Government officials said the insurance companies can identify the "risky drivers" by accessing the centralised database. "So, at the time of paying annual premium, the vehicle owner has to pay higher premium for errant driving. It is the responsibility of the owner to employ a good driver," said a government official. Welcoming the initiative to link safety to insurance premium, road safety expert Rohit Baluja said the key issue is "what all offences would make a driver risky and who will decide on the risky drivers". He said though it's a good thought, there is need to assess whether the country is prepared to implement such a legal provision where police have little knowledge on road safety and there is hardly any crash investigation to establish who caused the accident. A senior executive of a major insurance firm told TOI that the focus of all such reforms should be on the "internet connectivity and technology" for successful implementation. "Our country needs to gear up for such reforms, which are prevalent in other countries. We believe that no vehicle is risky, but the driver is," he added. Special commissioner (traffic) of Delhi Police Muktesh Chander said a driver who is prone to cause accidents must pay higher premium just as a sick man pays more for the insurance cover. "Until the livelihood of bad drivers and those posing serious risk to other road users is linked to his track record of driving, it would be tough to reduce fatalities," Chander said. Talking to this paper, a senior official at the Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDA) said at present the vehicle owner gets 'no claim bonus' for accident-free drive. "Once the government comes out with any new legal provision, the issue would be discussed on its implementation," he added. Road safety experts said insurance companies have driven road safety reforms in the developed world. "Their compensation outgo to third party reduces significantly if there are less accidents and particularly fatal ones. But for successful implementation of this provision, there is need to record all offences. Otherwise in most part of India every offence by a driver is the first offence and so he is not made to pay higher fine and also faces little penalty," said SP Singh of IFTRT, a think tank on transport issues.

Wholesale inflation at 5-year low, food prices dip India’s wholesale inflation rate plunged to 3.74% in August, the lowest in almost five years, aided by a sharp drop in vegetable and petrol prices, data released Monday showed. The more than one percentage point drop in wholesale inflation rates over July’s 5.19%, should bring cheer to the NDA government that rode to a landslide election victory promising to bring down prices of essentials as part of its poll pledge to usher in `Aachen din’ (Good days). It was also the lowest since 1.79% of October 2009, a period when demand for goods fell sharply battered by the worst global recession in 80 years. Besides, with crude oil prices falling to two-year low of $97 dollar a barrel, expect retail petrol and diesel prices to come down further. Wholesale food inflation, a measure of how costly the platter has become, grew 5.15% compared to the previous month’s 8.43%. Wholesale vegetable prices fell 4.88% in August on a year-on-year basis, while onion prices plunged 41%. Prices of protein-rich food items such as pulses, milk, and fruits have risen faster that overall food prices growing at 7.81%, 12.18% and 20.31% in August. As the tens of millions of people shift to higher standards of living, the focus is changing from basic needs of nutrition to such as rice and coarse grains to more aspirational protein-rich products, a trend that economists describe as structural inflation. `Manufactured products inflation’—a broad index to gauge price movements of industrial goods—was only marginally lower at 3.45% in August compared to July’s 3.67%, but significantly higher than last August’s 2.31%. In the current context, high manufactured products’ inflation implies greater demand and sales of consumer and investment goods, mirroring revival signs in the Indian economy that is battling to claw out of a quarter-century slump. RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has made taming inflation one of its top priorities, despite business leaders clamouring for rate cuts. "I have no desire to keep interest rates high for even a second longer. I want to bring down interest rates when it is feasible and that would be when we have won the fight against inflation," Rajan said in Mumbai. "There is no point in cutting interest rates to see inflation pick-up again," Rajan said, adding that right now he thinks the central bank is continuing the way it proposed recently. Retail inflation eased in August to 7.8% year-on-year from 7.96% the previous month, data showed last week, although that is still above the central bank's target of 6% by 2016. Industry leaders have been ratecthing up their demand for lower borrowing costs to assist investment plans, critical to spin jobs and multiply income. “Coming shortly before the monetary policy, this (low inflation rate) should also provide the necessary maneuvering space to the RBI, “ said Chandrajit Banerjee, CII director general. Analysts, however, cautioned that the time to open the bubbly may be still far away as part of the fall in wholesale inflation, is also because of a high base effect—a statistical phenomenon that magnifies small changes, although the real fall may not be very large. The rupee’s value—it fell 48 paise to close at 61.13 to a dollar on Monday—can also partly offset the gains from falling crude oil prices. Every time the rupee depreciates by one rupee against the US dollar, the fuel subsidy bill bloats by Rs. 8000 crore is added to the fuel subsidy bill. “It remains to be seen how agricultural produce prices move from here on and particularly in the October – November ’14 period given the monsoon this year has been delayed and largely subdued. We do not expect any change in RBI’s policy stance later this month and thereby expect the repo rate to be status-quo at 8%,†Care Ratings, a credit ratings agency, said in a research report.
