rkt.india Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 you may be rite. one never knows until we try it out. but dropping a player of dhonis caliber just for the sake of trying out a new caption does not seem like a wise decision. because even Dravid and Laxman were dropped. Viru, GG dropped..all better test players. You cannot hold on to,past glories and he isnt doing wonders at present in tests.
renjith Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 because even Dravid and Laxman were dropped. Viru' date=' GG dropped..all better test players. You cannot hold on to,past glories and he isnt doing wonders at present in tests.[/quote'] there is a difference. all those players were past their due date. in case of gg, it was serious out of form. dhoni as a wicket-keeper batsman is neither past his due date nor out of form. since 2011 june (last 3 years where all those loses happened) he has a test avg of 36 which is more than good enough for a wicketkeeper-batsman. people are calling to drop him for defensive captaincy and wrong selection policies. that is where i think replacements (both as captain and keeper) may do worse than dhoni. just for records, during the same period (since 2011 june) he averages 74 as an odi batsman batting at no 6. next best is kohli who averages 60 batting at no 3. that gives you an indication of this mans abilities. do you still think he is easily replaceable?
moniker Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 We are considering dhonis selection in indian cricket team. so comparing him with past and present indian wicket keepers only make sense. comparing him with gilchrist, sanga, stewart, ... does not make sense here coz when it comes to selection in india team, we can only consider indian players. again it does not make sense to compare him with other teams wicket keepers as we are considering indian team selection. if I said dhoni is one of the best wicket keeper-batsman in the world, then wat you said is valid. but that is not the case here. dhoni is cleary above all the past wicket-keepers india had. reg present, am yet to see any better wicket-keeper batsman in domestic circuit. tell me the name of one domestic wicket-keeper who will give us 30+ avg in overseas tests. you may say we will find out only if we try. but if we drop dhoni, who will captain? kohli clearly is not mature enough yet and there is no other person as well. so wat am trying to say is you need to consider the overall value dhoni adds to the team and not just his wicket-keeping skills. then compare that to any other available wicket keeper in india who will add more value than that. then you will understand why its important to continue with dhoni till kohli matures or a samson develops into a world-class batsman. yes i agree. but he is not just a wicket-keeper and we have to accept that fact. he is the best limited overs captain in the world he is one of teh best limited overs batsman in the world he has won 2 world-cups for us he has taken india to no 1 ranking in tests he has won 2 ipls and 1 champions trophy for his club he has a test average of 38 he is a decent wicket-keeper he is very strong mentally. only ganguly comes anywhere close to him in that sense and we certainly need a captain with that capability and not someone who is immature like kohli. when we consider all these things, do you think a saha can replace him? i also don't like his adament selction policies and defencive test captaincy. but when we look at the pros he is way above any other alternative atleast as of now. am not saying all these for the sake of arguing, but a different angle to look at things for those people who think we need to remove dhoni from test or even from all 3 formats. Comparing wicket keepers solely on their batting numbers is a fallacy. Dhoni comes nowhere in discussion on comparing the wicket keeping abilities with the likes of Kirmani or More. They were keepers first, batsmen next and batted at what, like no 8 or 9. Dhoni bats at no 7 away and no 6 in the subcontinent and occupies the spot of the all rounder that we don't have. He's expected to contribute much more with the bat than them. So does he fulfil his role? He averages 36 as a lower middle order bat, okay, not really setting the world on fire, but it's decent if he does reasonably well in the other discipline and taken as a whole. Let's see. He frequently doesn't go for the catches between him and first slip, stands miles away from the stumps so that most edges drop short and instructs the slips to stand back as well. His keeping to fast bowling sucks. The one thing he's good at is effecting quick stumpings and is decent when keeping to spinners, but your spinner isn't going to bowl a hell of a lot of overs in England so it isn't going to help a lot anyway. I personally don't think a batting average of 36 is good enough to overcome these shortcomings. Of course he's an all time great ODI player. But as a test cricketer, he's simply not good enough to deserve a place in the team.
undisputed chap Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 To balanceour side we are in need of a batting allrounder. Someonewho can bowl 10 odd overs everyday for not many runs. It doesn't matter if he bowls spin or pace. None of our batsman bowl & our bowlers can hardlyhold the bat. Our so called all rouders can neither bat nor bowl.

He is a decent wicketkeeper by any standards. Technically speaking keepers who dive more are less skilled ones coz that means most times they are not in position to take the ball. I too will be happy if we can find an indian wicketkeeper-batsman who can average 38+ in tests (dhonis current test average is 38.77).
rkt.india Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Hope Motu coach insists selectors to add Umesh to England test squad. I still cannot fathom how he isnt picked. Shami, BK, Umesh will form a pretty good attack. English conditions arent suited to Ishant.
renjith Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 won't be a bad idea as well to pick aaron and pepper english batsman with short balls. prior looked all at sea against 130 kph short balls from sl bowlers. consistent 145 kph short balls at body will be a handfull for most english batsmen.
skindia Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Robin would have been better swing bowler compared to binny

Yes, you need at least one bowler who can do that. Both Umesh and Aaron can do that.
renjith Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 indian team management will be eagerly studying the pattern of attack aus used in ashes. i won't be surprised if they choose aaron over ishant as 3rd seamer.

G_B_ Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I would chose Dinda over Ishant as a last resort and thats saying something

Your question is already answered in those
vishalvirsingh Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Personally I would die of shock Rangana herath- this Spinner from lanka has bowled 37 overs for 136 runs and bagged a Single wicket against england....so he has only done a holding job and took just one wicket... i dont think ashwin and Jaddu are better bowlers then Herath and i beleive these 2 guys can at best do a holiding JOb against england in england... i wud play 4 fast bowlers and expect a rohit sharma or a part timer to bowl Spin - if it is going to be a 4 pronged attack , it shud be 4 fast bowlers...( one BK is mandatory)

SLICKR392 Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 Damn sure robin would debut sooner in tests I hope that doesn't happen. He was troubled by Mortaza's swing as well.
