Positives and Negatives for India from Trent Bridge

Positives This match was a perfect warm up. India effectively have had 3 warm ups. Yes the pitch was not a typical English pitch but for a side who have never played a test in england (the majority of players) it allowed them to size up Broad and Anderson. Fight shown by numbers 7-11. The truth is with a young batting line up (in terms of tests played) our tailenders will have to show fight. Otherwise we lose. I saw evidence of that at Trent Bridge. India occupied the crease well. We have played out close to 280 overs in the match. With the second test only 3 days away Broad (knee) and Anderson must be feeling it big style. Already rumors that Broad might be out of Lords. This is attrition cricket. India put on 800+ runs without major contributions from Pujara Kohli Rahane. I am pretty confident these three will fire at some point during the series. Especially Kohli. shows depth. Bhuvi. Bowled with heart. That is good to see. Also fantastic defense. Negatives Dhoni's captaincy. I thought Dhoni was good on day 3. The following day it was terrible. India's inability to dismiss tailenders. Tied into the Dhoni captaincy. Our batsman did struggle when Anderson found some swing. Need to tighten their techniques. Jadeja did not make any impact. Did keep it tight but no wickets in 35 overs is not a great result. On the whole IMO for a team with no major experience of England its been a good start. They have put behind their mental issues of not crossing 400 now. They will also be better acclimatized to the weather conditions in the UK. Traditionally India have been poor in the first test of a series. The issue faced by India is do they stick with Jadeja and Binny? Does Ashwin come in for one of them?

Positives: vijay showed great application. Pujara too looked good in both innings. Negatives: Our fielding & catching remains horrible. Bunny's cheap runs vs ali & root will keep him in the side which will hurt us imo. Binny is not a test level bowler. Ishant getting 3wkts means he will remain in the side. This guy is amazing does just enough to retain his spot but never enough to win us a game. By far the luckiest guy ever. The jury is still out on the rest.

You pretty much nailed the +ves and -ves. Ill add some more: Positives: Quicker breakthroughs on a flat pitch. We got a wicket when 9 runs were scored, then got frequent wickets after ishant got the 2nd. Didnt allow the middle order to settle. Bhuvi has inspired the tail, hope to see better performances from them. Seemed like a true team effort. We can afford to have kumar at 8 and add another seamer and ashwin. Solid batting and better bowling.. win win. Negatives: Dhoni's captaincy. Dont know why we keep suffering. Cant our bowlers just demand a few things like a slip? Why dont they stick to simple plans and get the edges instead of overdoing short balls and overpitching? Mid order collapse.. need pujara, rahane and kohli to fire. Inability to bowl out tail.. but hope we learn and change things up. Jadeja - added nothing tbh. Even binny was better. But both need to go.

The only thing I will blame dhoni is his lack of proper rotation of bowlers. He had five bowlers but he played as if he had only 3, Dhoni's biggest weakness is allocation of overs so every bowler is relatively fresh. But unable to dismiss tail is due to lack of strike bowler who could clean tail up. This tail wagging is not just dhoni problem it is an age old problem which has plagued Indian cricket since they started playing cricket. Unless you get fiery fast bowler who can just blow tail enders away like MJ with all the protection these days on dead pitches tail enders who are patient can survive and score runs. So let us not push the blame on Dhoni as if he is only Indian captain who has allowed this to happen. I will play same team next test and that will be the last one for Jadeja just for one reason Ashwin has looked awful in practice matches and there are no other spinners in the squad. If they play Ashwin that is fine too. Binny needs to go if he bowls only 10 overs it does not matter if he scored some runs.

lords will be the perfect place for virat to fire. its a stroke makers pitch. i would not call binnys runs as being cheap. walked in at india being 140 odd runs ahead with only 4 wickets to play with. india nees to examine what they want their 5th bowler to do. keep it tight for 15 overs in a day or be a real wicket taker. both sides were playing with effectively 4 bowlers. ali and binny could not contain.

We need to swap Jadeja with Ashwin. Ashwin's technique is much better than Jadeja to play in overseas condition. Impressed by the batting department. Kohli is going through a rough patch ATM, I believe he'll make a comeback in this very series. Also Aaron in for Binny would add variety to the pace department. Binny is more of a batsman who can bowl rather than an all rounder. If you want to play 5 bowlers then why not a genuine pacer? Regarding Dhoni's captaincy, I don't think he'll learn from 1st match, which he didn't learn in three years.

Jadeja and Binny need to go, Pankaj and Ashwin need to come in. We will have two giants after a long long time Prasad and Kuruvilla.. Pissant has done enough to stay in the series and suck..hopefully Pankaj can do better than Binny. and Ashwin bats well else we are screwed...

Agree . Biggest issue was not Binny as 5th bowler but what role he is assigned . I suspect they view him as a wkt taking bowler in favorable conditions and jadeja as the containing bowler. Need to bring in Ashwin and use him as attacking bowler and Binny as defensive bowler .Assuming the pitch is just as flat

There are two reasons I made that comment - (1) Trent Bridge was Kohli's first Test match in England. The only game Kohli has played at Lords' is the tied ODI in 2011. (2) Many batsmen have struggled at Lords due to the slope. Kohli might find it difficult as he has a very strong leg side game and when the slope is towards the off side might leave him susceptible for LBWs. In short, Kohli will score at Lords if he counters the swing and slope.

Aaron will come in third test in place of the injured seamer - most likely Shami. Ishant never gets injured, so he will stay. Binny will continue to enjoy his luck for at least 3 tests.. Ashwin - Jddu swap is also on cards in 3rd test. My bet is on the same team in 2nd test
