He is good for dust-bowls of India; I would still pick Jaddu ahead of him in away games. Much more accurate, better fielder, doesn't try tricks every ball like Ashwin does. Ashwin may be a better bat, but that doesn't tilt the scales in my view.

Will need to contribute a couple of wickets at some stage during the tests. this containing thing is crap. It suits to teams have 3 very good bowlers who can destroy batting on their own like Aus an SA. Our bowlers are nit going to do that. We need all bowlers to be able to pick wickets.

Ashwin would have done zilch on that pitch. But to be honest it was bowlers graveyard, harsh to criticise any bowler based on trent bridge, joke pitch Relax !!! He has played only 4 tests abroad, never write off someone who is the 2nd fastest to 100 wickets in the history of the game !!!!

He proved that he is a decent batsman but as far as bowling concern he looks more like a part timer than an allrounder. Yeah he might be an allrounder for karnataka, bowling on tailor-made green tops in Ranji Trophy, where even vinay was bowling like Steyn. But you don't find such pitches in International cricket. IMO usually spinners bowling in tandem create a lot of pressure, than having a lone spinner. Ashwin can be better against tailenders with his height, variations and carrom ball. I don't think someone like anderson is good enough to read those. And then you have jadeja to held one end tight, so that Ashwin can attack more at the other end. And we know ashwin is a decent batsman.

Everyone forgets that it was largely his dog Turd bowling that was responsible for India losing their first test series at home in 30 years to English batsmen that don't even play spin well. In Joburg Ashwin couldn't even hold up one end as a bowler and leaked runs by the dozen. Yes he is a better test batsmen than Dhoni and Jadeja- but he's picked in a bowlers position. However if you wanna play him because his batting is good- then let him earn a place in the top 5. Not to forget- ashwin will guarantee drop one slip catch per game and is a donkey in the outfield

I'm willing to accept that Dhoni's captaincy negatively affects performance of all bowlers - but since Dhoni will be the capt for the 2nd test, I don't feel he warrants a place
