That's an over simplification. Yes Dhoni does get defensive but not all the time and immediately. Pretty every captain in the game sets defensive fields to restrict runs when the batsmen are on top. I'm not saying Dhoni is a great captain and shouldn't be held responsible. Absolutely he's responsible. But for goodness sake be realistic - a new captain isn't going to make our bowlers better and regularly take 20 wickets abroad regardless of what fields are set. You have to be honest about our bowling resources and the fact is India don't have the pace bowlers that are good enough or consistent enough to bowl out sides. It's been that way for a very long time regardless of who the captain is. Dravid, Ganguly and Kumble were all very different captains and it's not like we were terrorizing opposing batsmen and bowling sides out because our aggressive field placements on away tours. And seriously, please don't talk about our young bowlers being overbowled. Anderson and Broad have been the most overbowled guys in world cricket for the past two-three years but they produce results because they are simply better. The same with guys like Ryan Harris, Steyn, Morkel etc. We can have the same discussion for the next 30 years but until India start producing quality bowlers and not just one or two guys once in a while then it's not going to matter who's captain. You can't just magic 20 wickets because of field placements, energy, fresh ideas, young blood and so on.

Rather what you are saying is simplistic No one is expecting our bowlers to do as well as Steyn,MJ etc But Dhoni kills whatever chances THESE bowlers have to take 20 wickets.A good captain makes his bowlers better than they are.Dhoni makes them look worse Tell me which other captain goes in with just 4 bowlers including an allrounder and then uses his 4th bowler defensively on first day?Which captain omits arguably the best pacer from even the squad for a tour where conditions help pacers? You mentioned Dravid and Ganguly.We werent world beaters under them,but much better than now.Our bowlers are not that bad in favourable conditions if used rightly

That's purely a subjective argument. In the 2nd Test I saw slips and close fielders (for short pitched deliveries) used extensively and regularly even with the softer older ball. Dhoni does set defensive fields but really when the batsmen are on top and scoring freely. Then you have to restrict the flow of runs.

Dhoni goes on the defensive way too early.Like on the first day here,in first Test when Anderson and Root built a partnership,NZ 2nd Test.In 2nd Test here,he attacked maybe due to the pitch and we won. Issue here was he went for a draw from first day due to 1-0 lead.Not including an extra bowler even when our main bowler was out killed our chances to take 20 wickets.

Agree with OP on the changes. Shami has been poor all series. He has to bowl faster than 80-85 mph to get wickets. Dhawan's poor form continues. Jadeja has been good at controlling runs, but not much threatening.
