Ashwin, Kumar, Ishant, Umesh, Pankaj or Jadeja, Ashwin, Kumar, Ishant, Umesh the latter giving a bit more depth, is of course pithc dependant

Right from the time squad was announced Umesh was THE no 1 choice of everyone. There are many, many threads on this forum on this topic. Now in the absence of Umesh and with Ishant injured, people wanted Pankaj given a chance. And even now, no one is writing Pankaj off, he was decent.

kubrickian Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Umesh would bowl 6 deliveries in 6 different directions. He has potential but no consistency at all. Its a real shame. I find most bowlers who play for India have no passion or hunger to do well in tests. Many of them have ability when they start but don't have the work ethic to keep working and get better. When they find it a bit tough or get injured, they don't work hard enough to get back or learn new skills and do what it takes to become successful. They seem to be happy to earn some bucks in IPL and relax. Only B Kumar seems to have the determination to learn and become better but he is limited in his ability. Ishant Sharma, despite under achieving and being inconsistent always seems to give 100 %.

Even if he is not at his best he deserves to be in the test 16 as he can Get his rhythm and play. Pankaj bowled ok but still was never deadly ..Umesh plays one to 2 wicket taking balls every over. Pankaj needs to improve to fetch test wickets. Shammi should be rested from the eleven varun shud play.

Maybe the players are not been led or utilised properly...Maybe the same set of players could/would perform better and on long term if they know that the leadership/management is fair to all the players... Maybe if they are reassured that there won't be any partiality and all will get a fair chance to perform and on merit... Maybe if selectors and team management are in sync and have common goal of improving the overall performance of the team...
