Rahul Dravid thinks that calling Sachin selfish is a bit unfair. If you read between the lines, what he means is: Its not totally unfair, but only a bit unfair.

Sachin was/is/will always be the most selfish man to have donned the Indian jersey. 90s Tendulkar was different but the present version of the great man is not a man I admire. Just read his autobiography and you will get the picture,even the die hard Sachin fans will be disappointed. Well now since so many things have been said about selfish and non selfish, can any one explain to me what exactly is the criteria of calling a batsman selfish? I mean, what should a batsman do in the field apart from playing ball as per its merit and deciding what shot to be played within fraction of seconds so that he is not called selfish.

One question you asked is why you have to be nervous of 90s? You yourself have answered that it is a great personal milestone. This is the same reason people raise their bat or punch in the air after making the century right? It is a great feeling that you have acheived something. With the same logic all the batsman who show their happiness after hitting century should be selfish. Afterall your team has not won the match yet. You are being happy for yourself. IMO, happiness of acheiving something and being nervous just before that is natural human tendency it cannot be termed as Selfishness.

I wouldn't call Ishant selfish. He's not very talented and does not seem to possess an Einstein like IQ. But I don't think he's selfish. Sometimes we confuse rash with unselfish.

The point which was being made (not that I necessarily agree with) is that at times when there was conflict between the team's goal versus a personal milestone, Tendulkar took the latter over the former. There were many cricketers from India - even currently - who are not selfish. Sehwag had a chance to display that he was not - your obvious reference is to the Galle innings. Overall, people have kind of missed the point with Tendulkar or Indian cricketers. Selfish or not one HAS TO agree that Indians in general are quite obsessed with numbers (not difficult to imagine since we came up with the modern day number system). We don't view a number/statistic as an indicator but the end in itself. This is not just limited to cricket but goes across all other spheres in life - number of educational degrees, number of GBs of RAM or number of MPs of the camera in a phone are some examples. The sooner we accept it, the more peace we could make with understanding things around us.
