What A Gem Of A Captain Dhoni Is - A Look At Post Tea Session

Some gems by Dhoni today: 1. Started off the post tea session with Binny when he had our tail up . The aim was to wait for the new ball. EVEN when the old ball was spinning a bit for Ashwin (who was bowling well - it was doing a bit even when pacers were bowling) Dhoni didn't delay the new ball and went ahead with Bhuvi and Aaron. He could have delayed it a bit but he went ahead trusting Bhuvi (tired as hell), Aaron and Ishant to do the job. I can understand the new ball thing but I don't get why Binny started off a new session where we really had our tail up. 2. Next Bhuvi is given a 9 over spell even when he is bloody tired and hardly looked like picking up a wicket and went for plenty of runs. 3. Next poor rotation of bowlers and persisting with the same bowlers when they were getting whacked. 4. Even now didn't bring Ashwin. Went with Binny who was duly getting thrashed. 5. And don't get me started on Binny coming in for 5th bowler slot (never wanted him to come in place of 5 proper bowlers). Sickening stuff. Again let another game drift.

I am waiting for a day when some one like Ashwin(because he look slightly brighter option than others) will be captain, Zaheer will be our bowling coach, and Dravid will be our main coach. when this day will come?

Binny actually bowled well in that short spell after tea. He got the ball to swing and had a few close shouts. Dhoni did give the new ball to Aaron and Bhuvi but they couldnt do much. Bhuvi has looked tired right from the start of this game. He was bowling either legside or wide. He should have been rested for this game.

Binny earlier also bowled some good deliveries but used to go for runs with the usual one bad delivery an over. After tea, his bad deliveries reduced. But the thing is when you start a session and you want to stamp your authority, Binny was not the right choice. You need someone to create and maintain solid pressure. Binny should have come later on. There were 9 overs before the new ball and that's like 1/3 of the session. Plus the bowler rotation after the new ball was taken was atrocious (which is what actually killed us). Yes, one goes with a Plan A (for rotating new ball bowlers) but when things are going really bad, one needs to be adjust accordingly and take action which Dhoni didn't. He just kept doing what he did.

He gave Aaron far too long a spell just before tea. So, he couldn't give him another after tea. 6 instead of 9 over spell would have been better. He looked really stiff with second new ball.

Aaron bowled 22 overs today out of 86 bowled in the day. More than any bowler today. At least 4 overs too many for a bowler like him. He needs to be managed better. He bowled 7 over spell in the morning then 9 over spell after lunch. 16 overs in 2 spells. While he could have been used in 3 spells of 5 overs. He will soon be done and dusted if used this way.

No idea which captain you have been watching but all the above were right moves after tea. Now one could argue he overbowled aaron and underbowled ishant but he had to go for the kill. You drop catches left right don't score runs and expect captain to magically win you games. Criticize the guy when he deserves it, threads like these are just blind hate.

9 overs before new ball means 1/3 session is gone. Starting with Binny was as defensive move as it gets. After the new ball was taken, our bowlers were getting thrashed and still Dhoni did nothing and went with the flow. Bhuvi was used for a 9 over spell (even when he was tiring, was ineffective and was getting thrashed) and that's a proper move? You need to see the history too. Bhuvi has been so misused by Dhoni (due to his decisions to not go with 5 "proper" bowlers) that its sad. Also as rkt.India mentioned, Aaron's usage before affected us post tea. A spinner is sometimes used not just to get a wicket directly but to control the workload of pacers and make them have a go at batsman all the time. If all our pacers were going at full throttle and were effective, the case was different. But it was not and one had to do some balancing act. This is not a hate threat. This post tea session exactly shows what's wrong with Dhoni. Our bowlers had issues but Dhoni's tactics ensured whatever little chance we had to apply pressure was gone. Its as clear as it gets.

Also criticizing Dhoni does not mean one implies this loss is Dhoni's fault. Its not. Dunno why people automatically assume that. Our batsmen are to blame here but that doesn't mean one can't criticize the captaincy. Dhoni again let the game drift (because of some uninspiring and soul sucking captaincy) and deserves flak for that.

We are 2 - 1 down, batsmen have already messed up 1st innings so now the guy is looking at his bowlers to produced 8-10 edges so that at least 2-3 will be held. I don't blame him for doing what he did .

A smarter captain would have rotated the pacers better, brought in the spinner to control the runs and ensured that the pacers bowl shorter spells with more effort in each spell. The same thing happened in Joberg Test too. Zaheer came in post tea session (or so I think), was getting thrashed and Dhoni did nothing. He just follows a template. If it clicks, it clicks. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

no captain in the world gives a genuine fast bowler more than 4 or 5 over spell. Dhobi a-hole is going to kill varun Aaron bowling like this. Complete chewtiya who has no idea whatsoever about managing fast bowlers. I wouldn't even mind if dhoni gets hit by a beamer and gets paralyzed for an year or two.

Atherton praised Dhoni by saying, "India's captain is a remarkable cricketer in so many ways, successful, savvy, and streetwise as he is." The former England opener summed by giving his views on Dhoni's tendency to do something that isn't the norm. He said, "His innings at Old Trafford, as the debris of India`s top order batting swirled around him, was a lesson in how match awareness can override technical deficiencies. His wicketkeeping at Lord's, when he stood about four metres back for Ravindra Jadeja, spoke of a man uninterested in either convention or what the critics might say."

Putting it mildly .... Dhoni is not a smart captain. Think about what not to do in a situation , especially while fielding, and you will know what Dhoni will do. He is not test captain material but we have to tolerate him.... no other way. Poor batting has been the biggest reason for our losses, no doubt about that. But, Dhoni has tried to contribute with his amazing captaincy as much as possible.
