Fletcher's present contract was extended till next year's world cup. If BCCI terminates it now, it would probably cost them a lot of money. Therefore they are trying to sideline him completely so that he resigns himself. Any self respecting man would. And who better to perform that job than one of BCCI's most loyal dogs Shashtri!

Part of the drama is also to divert attention from Dhoni's captaincy. India would most probably perform better in ODIs making this move an instant success. Granted Shashtri is not the best option but he is no worse than Fletcher. There is a certain level of pride in at least having an Indian coach if India wants to consider itself up there with the big boys. As crappy as Brazil the football team is they arnt exactly going to go hire all foreign staff now are they?
