That is a very insensitive comment to make considering everything. There are lots of people who would like to chase their dreams no matter what. This has nothing to do with education at all Would you also blame parents of people like Sachin because he did not complete schooling? If you want to blame someone, blame the movie industry for not looking after a good actor and of course, as usual, no blame to the guys who force people like her into this. You have to think about the Bollywood industry too here. I think her main drawback was her looks as her acting from what I saw was top notch. So she couldn't be the traditional heroine. In some way Bollywood has moved from conventional roles for heroes, even people like Irfan or Nawazuddin are getting great roles. However, actress still need to have a certain look and are limited to roles like item numbers
She worked in Ekta Kapoor serial Kahani Ghar Ghar ki which is what made her a household name at first in early 2000s. She should have tried there again, but I guess she opted for a shortcut.

Why is that in India pre marital sex is considered wrong and yet even prostitution is illegal ? What about men and women who want to have sex but don't want to get married ? Do they expect them to remain virgins till 40 years or older if they don't get married ? How archaic and regressive are these rules ? Not having sex for some people will lead to all kinds of psychological issues, deviant behavior, frustration, depression and sexual repression could lead to rapes and hate crimes. Have to say, India is no different from Islamic countries when it comes to these things. Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply being delusional.
I used to think like this before, but in a country like India where there is huge population and crippling hygenic issues, I don't think prostitution can be made illegal. Even if made legal, there will be a huge spike in AIDS and other sexually transmitted dieseases. Girls who unwillingly become sex workers or the ones who are forced into this business, might come into a point of no return as almost every pimp will be able to get away. One way is to issue a 'licence' to this business where the sex workers can attend an interview to get it done like we do in RTO's. But knowing our corrupt officials, it's also too complex to be practical. For example, the RTO who gave me car licence doesn't even know that I m driving a car with automatic transmission.

I don't get this, most people say that all sex workers are always forced. The hooker with a heart of gold stereotype is playing big. Most high profile sex workers do this for easy money in big numbers. How did she ran out of money? could be lavish spending. She could have persued studies with the money she earned and a middle class life with a decent job. There are so many lessons in the past and many child actors have gone bad.

some time back i read an article about, how once you are a recognized face, say a reasonably well known actress, it is difficult to take up an ordinary 9-5 job and blend in to the workforce. I read this article after one of the Bollywood actresses's committed suicide. This might not apply completely in this case since she was a relatively unknown actress but it explains why some of them get desperate enough to try drastic measures.

You are talking the opposite way Everything from AIDS to STDs to forcing girls happen BECAUSE everything is illegal and under the table. If this was legal there would be some regulations and checks and balances in place for all of these things

I didn't say the girls were forced. I am saying a) She is jailed for doing something whereas the guys who did it with her are free b) Bollywood as an industry is heartless towards women c) She sold her own body. It is somehow being portrayed as the biggest crime on earth And why should she peruse studies when her dreams were of being an actress? Just because most people do not have the courage and kill their dreams does not mean everyone should Even now I do not think that what she did was the big mistake, it was getting caught which was.

Agree with b and c. Not sure abt a, no news about others.

well, persuing studies is better than becoming sex worker. Yes, getting caught is a big mistake so does doing prostitution for big bucks.

Dood, I would agree with your post if our country is a perfect non-corrupt. The bolded part will happen but will terribly backfire. A huge percentage of men don't go to sex workers in the fear of getting caught and the fear of STD's. I am sure the numbers of girls who are willing to be a sex worker and the ones who are forced will multiply. The supply and demand will eventually increase. Making it legal only opens up new problems. Please read the 2nd para of my post, I m trying to say the country is not ready for this right now.

It seems very harsh to see the way the media is putting up her picture in every news channel and website as though she has done a major crime to humanity. The people who paid her did it of their own choice, nobody forced them and she also did it out of her own choice even though she said it was because of financial problems. Can anyone see why such a brouhaha is made over this ? Slow news day for media outlets perhaps ?

You mean prostitution can't be made legal? It is legal in India unless you don't pimp/solicit.

Why arrest her?She didn't rape any one. Unless she was forcing someone into prostitution...there is no reason to arrest.A juvenile who disemboweled a girl and raped her gets to stay in a reform home in complete anonymity while her face is splashed all over.Sad.

I don't think she's arrested but her pimp has been arrested and sent to jail. Shweta is lodged at a rescue home run by Women and Child Welfare department where she will stay for 3 months. Apparently, they get free food, medical care, training etc.

She is a grown up person and was doing it by her own choice. If any one has to be arrested, I use if, it's her only. Anybody else would come second.

The point you raise is "Should pimps be illegal if there is no force?". I'd think that's a tricky subject in the current social landscape. We also don't know if Shweta Prasad is the only person in this racket or were there other people who were forced. I think under law - the police is pretty much ok here.

According to Shweta.. there are many heroines doing this. She is the only one who got caught. One of the may have encouraged her as she admits people around her encouraged her.

Yeah, I am aware as per law pimps can be booked rather easily. Laws are not clear on this. So as I understand, prostitution is not illegal. But not all things which are not illegal, are legal. Prostitution falls in that category. I am thinking here more from common sense perspective. If a grown up person wants to do prostitution in want of some quick buck, why would you hold intermediary or broker more responsible than the person himself. That person unless tricked or coerced or unless she is minor holds primary responsibility.

No, it wouldn't make sense to hold him responsible. But, here's something to think about - how will you prove something is forced or not? The power balance is so high on the victim that the broker might have high leverage on the victim (family etc. since brokers tend to be a network generally) making it a bit difficult to prove in court.
